Here's something you'll not see every day.....

Actually, after almost 20 years of collecting GSA coins, I've NEVER seen this many unopened GSA's in one place. These dollars were all bought directy from the GSA in the early 1970's by a single collector.
Interestingly, the GSA had stipulated that an individual could bid on only one coin for each date. But this enterprising collector managed to circumvent the one-date-per-person rule by submitting bids in mulitple family member names. Those pieces with mailing labels are represented by the dates 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, and 1885-CC. The contents of the unlabeled boxes are a mystery.
I was fortunate enough to have been offered the opportunity to purchase this neat GSA deal in its entirety.

Thanks.

Weren't there a few 1879CC's included in the hoard? Might be wishful thinking that the unopened boxes contained any, but you never know......

WOW! Now that's a great "pile" of history, and I don't mean Gomer.
Back then when I submitted I couldn't even get one!
Congrats on the hoard!

That is quite a testimony to the uniqueness of this collection. Simply Amazing.
Now that's a nice pic. Can't remember on the boards where anybody
posted a pic of over 60 Carson City Morgans and you couldn't see the coins,
but you know they were there.
I think I'll head over to the BST board (
Great score!!!

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
For the record, the 'better date' coins sold in the unopened, unmarked boxes (the Mixed CC category) were as follows:
1879-CC - 490
1890-CC - 339
1891-CC - 510

That photo may make an interesting addition to Dave Bowers' upcoming dollar book. I noticed in the current edition of E-Sylum that Mr. Bowers is is seeking to borrow historical illustrations relating to the design, coinage, storage, distribution, and any other aspects of Morgan dollars and double eagles, including, for dollars, distribution during the Treasury releases of 1962-1964.
And that credit will be given for any items used...
