How should I sell a large number of slabs?

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,702 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have 12 PCGS slabs, as well as 10 NGC slabs... mostly Lincolns and Jeffersons worth $5-$10. Should I sell them on eBay in one huge lot, break it into two lots, or do something completely different?

  • Sir, you can sell them to me.................
    New shop..........New lessons every day...............
  • If you sell them in singles, the fees will kill you. Between the listing fee and the fact that on final value, anything under $25 is 5+ percent. As singles, if together they go for, say $125 all told, you will have to pay that 5+ percent on the entire $125.

If you lump them all together and start the bid at .99, you'll only pay a .30 cents listing fee. You could put them in 2 categories for more exposure, that way. If the lot goes for $125, then, you pay the 5+ percent on the first $25 and only 2.75 percent on the rest for final value.

I do believe I've listed them in the past.

Did you list them with a price or just what type of coins you had?

And you admitted your coins are worth $5. to $10. each so you're already offering 50% more value than BlueManGroup.

Disregard all the chimps want to be pimps flopping like a fish on the bank of life with a blindfold on.
I been watchimg sleazeBay so I got selling junk down pat:

#1 first you have to have a catchy title.
RARE AMAZING RAINBOW!! PCGS NOT NGC, ICG ANACS
Even if they are blast white AMAZING RAINBOW is allowed cause that's what everybody else does.
It's also very important, this is the most important part, that you say NOT NGC, ICG ANACS in your title. That way bidders that's not looking for NGC, ICG, or ANACS will find them in their search.

#2 Starting price. 1¢ or $9.99 it doesn't matter because the fee is the same. 99¢ is a good one because no matter what it is somebody will bid on it if it is less than a $1.

#3 IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOUR DESCRIPTION SAYS!! JUST MAKE SURE YOU USE ALL CAPS!!! Use the !! key a lot!!. Like this: !! You might want to reference the PCGS Price Guide or your grandfather but maybe not because nobody ever reads the description anyway and it's a lot of extra typing.
This is very important: Do not use <p> just let your paragraphs run together so the bidders get blurry eyed & stop reading and don't notice your non-existant return policy or high shipping rate.
Act stupid too. For example nobody buys a counterfeit coin unless you say "My friend said his coin might be counterfeit but my grandfather had it a long time so it must be real. You be the judge." Lots of misspelling make you look like legit like an average joe.

#4 Return policy. This is very important too. Don't have one! You're not an approval service. But don't say you don't have one, just act like you do until somebody wants to return the coin then say "Sorry, no returns, you should have used the "Ask Seller a Question" function and asked before bidding."

#5 Shipping fees; This is the most important part, pay close attention because this will be where you make all your profits. You don't want to charge actual cost because you need to make up for your gas, staples, tape, time etc. You're not selling coins to do anybody any favors! I know your mother doesn't let you use the car so you are automatically justified in charging a high rate because it takes longer for you to walk to the Post Office, i.e. more of your valuable time wasted. The bidders must pay for the wear & tear on your Walmart Nike knockoffs if they want the coin.
So $9.99 is good. Nothing more because bidders flip out when postage for cheap coins crosses the big ONE ZERO mark. You also charge them $1.30 extra for insurance but under no circumstances do you buy insurance. If they question you just tell them you are self insured. If they say they didn't get the coin just tell them you aren't responsible for the Post Office and they should have bought insurance, block their email so they can't pester you & relist the coin next week.
No need to buy expensive bubble mailers just use a regular envelope. If you have some used Safe-T-Mailers you can reuse those but most coin dealers are hateful and smash them together so hard you can't pull them apart without destroying them because they don't want you to have something for free that they paid .05¢ for.
A 37¢ cent stamp works just fine. A Postal Meter sticker won't make it get ther any faster plus you can just throw it in your mailbox for pickup and save more valuable time & increase profits by not having to walk to the Post Office because your mother won't let you use the car.

#6 Pictures. This is the easiest part of the whole process. Just find a coin similiar to yours on a large dealers website and link to it. Don't use a small wannabe dealer's site because he will notice the increased bandwidth usage and change the picture to something pornographic and you will get NARU from eBay.
To prevent this just right click a picture, save it, & reupload it as your own. If the seller has the right click button disabled in his javascript just right click it and hit "enter" at the same time and you can snag it anyway.
Small mile high pictures like a picture of the whole scanner bed with a dime on it works best because the bidders will start thinking he might be getting a nice cherrypick and bid more than if you have a good picture so that he can see how rotten your coin really is.

Do all this and your 22 slabs will put over $200 in your pocket even if they sell for 1¢ each. Of course they will probably sell for $5 or $10 each and put $400 in your pocket.

Since I like you, I'll let you in a little secret but this is between me & you, ok? You can start a thread on this board and call it "How's my pictures" and link your auctions. Or maybe something catchy like "Post a cool coin" thread or "Post a toned coin" thread and use the coins you're selling in the thread. Don't link but use html or src=image or whatever so that everybody that clicks on the thread sees them whether they want to or not.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

LMAO ..... TTT just because it's the truth. Guess I haven't been the only one that see's through all the spam on here. But we're not suppose to go against the grain here I forgot.

Dog... hope you don't mind me adding to your very eloquent description of sales tactics..... You know how on the BST board they have a gentleman's agreement that you only give your thread a TTT ONCE a day?

Well the heck with that. You want to sell your coins and don't care what all the good members do. Give it a TTT at least twice a day, and have your buddies give it a bump as well.

Oh yeah, can't forget every time you sell one, (even though nobody cares) give it a TTT and say "another one sold."

    Hope this helps.

    Oh Jeremy,

I have an idea. Maybe you should post on the US Coin forum that you had a bunch of slabs to sell and title it "How should I sell a large number of slabs?" I bet you'd get a whole bunch of offers.

You are wise beyond your years.image

Dog, THANK you. I hope you don't mind, but I copied that and saved it and even if you do mind, I will just block you and never answer if you want any royalties.

    ROTFLAMO

May I be so bold as to suggest one more step? I know, you have covered it very well, but there is one thing missing.
    ................................................
Be sure to superimpose either your stolen image or your blurry one on a page of the Gutenberg Bible or some 14th century multicolored complex image that takes HOURS to download. A BILLBOARD may be even better but so far I haven't seen one used. Just so it has lots and lots of gigabytes of IMAGE.

    .............................................................

It is perhaps not even WORTHY of addition to your excellent suggestions, but perhaps you (pardon me) "overlooked" it.

Yeah topstuf, feel free to copy, reprint, gaveaway, sell or whatever you can get from it.
Heehe It's funny but kinda true too.
And thanks for the added tips & comments.
And here's a workaround for the 15 PMs I got calling me an idiot and saying that airplanenut might get a negative feedback if he did all that:

#7 feedback: Just don't leave any feedback until the buyer leaves feedback first. That way if he slams you you can slam him back with LIAR! CHEAT! FRAUD! NPB ALERT! REPORTED TO EBAY! AVOID THIS SCAMMER BIDDER!! STUPID NEWBIE
But of course the buyer don't want a slam on his perfect record as a buyer so he keeps his mouth shut and airplanenut's feedback stays impeccable.

    airplanenut soon gets POWERSELLER status.

Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
