What coins are you holding PURELY for investment purposes?
First, don't bother answering if your answer is "None".
For the rest of you: Yes, I understand that you collect coins because you love them. Yes, I understand that "investment" is a four letter word around here. That said, you might still want to make a few bucks when you see an opportunity. So, tell us, do you own any coins that don't fit in your collection that you are holding purely as an investment?

But.......i simply can't catagorize any of my coins like that! Simple put,....if i don't really love a coin for it's "look".......i won't put it away anyway. The investment side of a coin purchase is certainly considered, along with comparable worth relative to what's usually seen for the coin.
I try to look at my "key" dates a little bit harsher, in that when i find a knockout eye-appealing example i realize i might never find another to replace it..........so it's likely to remain in my collection anyway. But i honestly can't say i'm holding it for investment purposes ONLY. (partly maybe.......but a very small part!).
Those that can truly say they're holding a coin "purely" for investment purposes are a better man/woman than i am, for if a stupid money offer came along to them the coin would most likely be sold. And if we consider that in general the "keys" have always done well over time, then those i own and have put away serve the holding for investment purposes the best. It is, however, a built in feature and therefore can't be said to be the main reason for putting them aside.
I'd have to be in grave financial straights to consider parting with about half of my collection.......and i refuse to disclose them...... for should they come into the marketplace you would all know i was desparate and might take advantage of me!
....sorry Andy......i guess i should not have answered because it looks like i've arrived at .....NONE!

this is a collector forum. why don't you take this BULL to a investment forum.
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.
Always looking for nice type coins
my local dealer
I also will save almost any really nice clad I can for the last several years.
Coins really aren't a good investment vehicle largely because of the costs as-
sociated with getting in and out. But these coins were mostly all raw so the
potential loss is relatively small.

Thye closest thing to an investment for me is the 155 buffalo silver dollars I bought from the US Mint directly in my name and my wife's name at the original $30 and $32,50 price. I have not sold them.
For some reason I always sell them off. Maybe I am a hard core collector that I would rather have the money in the here in now to buy coins that will help me finish my set.
For the love of the hunt I am unable to hold coins as investments except as an afterthought to knowing that my core set which I love too much to sell will appreciate over the years anyway.

I do not believe that the great collectors do have specific coins for investment.
They might have considered their collection as an investment, in general, but Bass or Fred certainly did not have anything outside of their collection that was a numismatic "investment".
I know that Pittman had some bulk material, but he never sold any. Norweb, Carter, Garrett? I do not think so.
I think that no specific item is a satisfactory answer.
Now, as for Stewart's 63 cent, if he does get it upgraded, I would be happy to offer it on his behalf, although to be very honest, I believe the value is extremely speculative, and not one that I would recommend that any one purchase. The nice thing about numismatics is that everyone gets to make their own decisions about their collections and the value of items added to it.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

That sounds more like a speculation. ...A very interesting speculation at that!
For example, I loaded up on colonials when I heard that PCGS was planning to start grading them. (Unfortunately, I sold too soon.) I am also planning to INVEST in some nice original PDS commem sets in the hopes that NGC's new set holders will impact the market for the coins. Although I like these coins, they have NOTHING to do with my current collecting interests.
