Did Barney's coin sell at LB?

You remember the one.....two-sided toning........86 or 84-P....don't recall exactly.

Just wondering.

    Yikes!! Ouch is right.

That coin was offered to me a couple of years ago at something like $2400 by dealer Warren Reeves and I told him he was stark-raving mad. Some number of months later (at an LB show) it was again offered to me at $2100. While I easily recognized the coin, I didn't know the dealer so I didn't insult his mother.

Barney later showed me the coin after he'd purchased it for cash and trade.

I hoped he'd do better than that on the piece, but I'm not really too surprised. I remember telling Warren that I'd rather wait and buy that coin at auction one day for $500-1000. Guess I wasn't too far off.

    Thanks,

    GSAGUY

I bid $450 on it, TBT was also an underbidder.

Barney thought he had a buy back for $2000 on it, because he posted it didn't sell and he would be keeping it.

Later he posted an email from them saying "If you want a reserve let me know", but I think he skipped over that part.

As in a traditional live auction, it is the discretion of the auctioneer that determines which bids of the same amount are accepted.

    Relayer,

In other words, the coin sold for $800 plus the juice? That's gotta hurt.

    Gsaguy,

Actually, it sold for $805 including the juice. Hammer was $700.

    Thanks for the link relayer.

From the correspondence I saw, it certainly looked like Barney asked for a $2000 reserve on that coin. Of course, some correspondence may be missing, including phone conversations.

So where's this thing stand....they sold the coin and told him to take a hike?

The last time he said goodbye, he said they sold the coin. I think this is the sentence in his email that did him in:

<< <i>Please advise my of the cost involved before executing my request >>

He told them to do, but then said tell him the cost before they do it. Hard to understand how the deal got messed up. image

I think there was a bunch of communication breakdown thoughout the process of the sale. Not sure where the real fault lies, but I do feel sorry for Barney. He took it coming and going on this one.

    I see.

If they quoted him a cost as he requested, but then he never said 'okay', they could assume he had changed his mind on the original request.

I agree with Russ, this one was a costly lesson in more ways than one. Based on the bit of correspondence I've seen, if I were Goldberg's, I'd make him whole on the $2000 reserve.

    Hey Gsaguy,

You're renowned for the best toners, but you weren't around when I scored this one:

It's actually already been sold, but I'd be interested in your opinion.

    Russ,

That one not only has all the right colors in all the right places, but the surfaces look plenty clean as well. And for an 82-O the luster looks exceptional.

What's the story on that one? Nice score.

One day if we can hook up at a show, I'd be glad to show you a few of my 'cuter' pieces.

    Gsaguy,

Amazingly enough, I found it raw at a flea market. Posted images of it here to make sure it wasn't AT (I'm still learning). The response was good so I expressed it to PCGS on a $50 submission and it graded MS65.

I would LOVE to see some of your stuff sometime! Maybe some day.
