Where can you get a slab machine?

I was wondering with the upstart of so many companies how they got the slab machines and their molds for the holders. Is there a company that deals in just that?

Pushkin had some slabs with his own inserts and all.

Not sure if they were snap-together type of sonic sealed but they looked professional (sonic weld).?

Flaminio, thanks for that great link. Even the license agreement can be viewed. Check out paragraph 5 if you want to feel sick to your stomach.

The sales pitch left out the part about YOUR NEW COIN SLABBING COMPANY DOES NOT EVEN HAVE TO FOLLOW ANY GRADING STANDARDS RECOGNIZED IN NUMISMATICS. THAT'S RIGHT, YOU CAN PUT ANY OLD GRADE YOU DARN WELL PLEASE ON YOUR SLABS, THEREBY MAKING YOUR CLIENTS HAPPY AND ENSURING REPEAT BUSINESS.

  • Where is the Slab Caddy Forum at?
  • To "slab" your own coins, you need an ultrasonic welder, a "bell" that is die cut to hold your slab pieces and the slab pieces themselves. These can be two piece or three piece. The two piece require different sized dies for each denomination. With the three piece, you have two standard shells and some kind of chemically inert insert that is cut to each denomiation size. Costs a bundle... mostly for the die work in setting up the slab pieces and/or inserts.

Check with Gary Fernandez out in California. He used to do his own PCGS slabs.

Whoooooa..... What the hell is this? (from the ACG website)

"All other services use a soft PVC WASHER OR AN INSERT to cut cost which, over time (1 to 5 years), will leach PVC film onto the coin's surface, especially Proofs within months."

There's no way than can be true. Right?...... Right?...... No really, right?......

Either ACG is looking to get sued by "All other services" or "All other services" are going to get sued by collectors!!

  • From what I understand Allen Hagar sued PCGS in the mid 80`s for stealing his patent of sonicly sealing coins in plastic.

Ultrasonic welder is not that big of a deal...they are used by electronic companys that do wiring... the biggest drawback is that younger people hear the sound of nails being drawn on a chaulkboard....

I have some experience with Plastic molding, and Ultra Sonic welding.
Your biggest expense is the type of mold you choose, the "finish" of the mold, and the amount of cavities the mold would have. A 1 cavity mold would produce 1 part per cycle, a ten cavity mold would produce 10 parts per cycle...Major money. Once the mold is created, the production of the parts is relatively inexpensive. Various plastics companies sell the material, you can find those in the "Thomas Register" . You can even call the manufacturers, and ask to speak with an application Engineer for Material guidance. The Ultra sonic welder is a common Item, look in Thomas register as well. not a show stopper price wise.

He exists Accugrade has a division that does just that, their Private Label Service. Just follow the link in Flamingo's post. Cost is about $4 per coin, you provide the coins and the grades, they provide the shells, labels, and sealing.

Cameron, check with Hager. He used to offer to set up services including the sonic welder and to provide shells for $50,000.

No it is not true. The other services do not use PVC inserts. Sometimes you can see an oil on their inserts that is actually a moldslip from the fabrication molds. Since most people confused the plasticizer oil used in PVC holders as being the PVC Accugrade is trying to claim that this oil shows that the other companies inserts contain PVC.
