i actually played hockey, defense and goalie..watched almost every hockey game live at the garden for 3 years straight..i admit hockey has its entertainment value, i enjoyed it..but unless u live in minn. chances are youll never pick up hockey stick your life..and that will mean one less fan..

I think both are boring, I don't really watch or pay attention to either sport except for the local teams. Plus, it doesn't help that there isn't much parity in either sport, but it does seem to slowly drifting to equal competition.

euphoria---udakb8 is right on....if you would happen to ride around towns and view people playing pickup games in sports...Over 90% would be playing basketball, hardly ever do I see somebody playing hockey, and baseball and basketball is played but not nearly as much as you see people playing basketball.....So it is obvious that lots of basketball fans were actually out playing, unlike hockey, where the only people playing are people at practices or games...And I GUARANTEE you that everybody can name the last 5 years of NBA Finals winners, but how many people can name the last 5 Stanley Cup winners (minus the die-hard hockey fans)...And you and I both know the NBA playoffs get better ratings than the NHL Playoffs...Bottom line, this thread was dumb.

That really depends on where you are...If you are in like Sacramento, more people our going to be playing BKB. If you are where I am, South Jersey, more people are playing street hockey. What do you mean not everyone goes to ESPN.Com? Nobody goes to ESPN.com, but everyone goes to this forum...Anyone that is a sports fan, at one time has gone to espn.com. Maybe you guys just need to suck it up and admit that people have different opinions.

I love both sports and flip from NHL playoffs to NBA playoffs to check out scores. Now which game does the TV usually stay on for the majority of the time? NHL playoffs. Why? Because they give it their all...they play with broken noses, broken bones, bleeding all over the place and rather die than lose. NBA is great, don't get me wrong, I watch a ton of playoff games....but nothing is like NHL playoffs.

Tonights games are going to be amazing....game 7's.....Philly vs. Toronto is going to be a war. What would I rather watch? A blow out with the Lakers smoking the Timberwolves...or a game that is probably going to be settled in double overtime...

Bottom line is that MOST people, including myself, think that the NHL is an incredible BORE. It just sucks, i watch the "highlights" on SportsCenter and think "so what?". They just fly around and slap at a puck, it's like soccer, only they always seem out of control. The fights are nice, but that's about it....

I admit the sudden death is cool, but it's the notion of a "sudden death overtime" that's cool, not the game itself...

Personally, as most probably know I prefer hockey. But then again, I've lived in Michigan my entire life and their team is rich in tradition and have had great success throughout their history unlike some of the other teams in Michigan (Detroit). I used to enjoy basketball quite a bit, but I personally think that many of the young players today are immature, marginally talented and more concerned about how they are perceived in history and less about their teams success. It's not to say that there are not players with the same mentality in the NHL, but to me it seems there are less even though an NHL team carries twice as many players. Both sports have their goods and bads. To me, I love the physical aspect of hockey and the fights are certainly a bonus. I like the fact that every goal (or even a good scoring opportunity) can bring a crowd to its feet because they are more difficult to come by then the NBA. Each score carries more of a premium. Football is similar in that respects. But, to each his own...

We created basketball....yea that's right...if your watching basketball right now...hey it wouldn't be there if it wasn't for Canada.

The Toronto Blue Jays won the championship......guess the US was bitter, they flew our flag upside down to curse us.

Just a note of some famous Canadians for you....

Pamela Anderson, Shania Twain, Keanu Reeves, Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, Peter North (Porn King), Jim Carrey, Mike Myers....any amazing hockey player....Larry Walker....

Stop bashing Canada....we dont' bash the US, we just didn't support the War. Also, naming french fries Freedom Fries?!?! Freedom Syrup sounds good too.....

I think that hockey is a lot better than basketball. This is my opinion and I know im gonna get bashed for it, but I have always thought basketball is one of the most boring sports to watch. A bunch of people throwing a ball into a hoop 50 times a game just gets lame. I couldn't agree more about this years NHL playoffs will be better than the NBA playoffs. Like this Leafs and Flyers series, nothing gets better than three overtime games, a single, double, and triple over time game doesnt get any better than that. I would like to see a basketball series match that. Plus you got huge hits, 90MPH slap shots, nasty fights, huge upsets, give me a break basketball is more exciting than that.

Well, this is nice; a poll from the world leader in sports that reaffirms what I've been saying all along. The NBA sucks! Altho, I do have to say that watching the NBA saves you from watching Americas' Most Wanted; you can see alot of the criminals right on the court.
While I do find the writing in euphoria 18 sig line to be very ignorant, he should remember how great it is to live in a country where he wouldn't get his tongue ripped out for saying something like that, even if it is Canada.
This years playoffs in the NHL so far have been some of the most exciting. There seems to be a changing of the guard, so to speak, going on what with the Wings getting swept 4 straight, the Avs being taken to a 7th game & some awesome young stars starting to shine through all of this excitment. There have already been more overtime games in this years NHL playoffs & looks like it might set an all time record. That makes for very competitive games that are alot of fun to watch.
Now, when you look at the NBA playoffs, the only thing anyone even cares about is who are the Lakers going to trounce in the finals come late June, early July! Talk about a BORING ! YAWNER! sport!
I don't even need my Ambien to get to sleep when there is a late NBA game on.
Oh, one other thing gang before you continue ripping the NHL; do yourself a favor & watch a few of the games. You are going to see more black players emerging in this league. Some of them are young, upcoming stars in this league. Other minorities are also making thier mark as well. Last nites overtime winning shot for the Wild came from Park, a young asian player who is making the most of his chance in the league.
Tonite would be a great nite to check out some NHL games. ESPN is televising 3 game 7s'. There will be plenty of drama & action in all 3 of these games. Wake up dudes & see what you have been missing!

So truely Bush did not intend to make their people and their safety our first priority when invading Iraq, but only says that is the intent to justify his actions...

As I've said before, I do not really support or protest the war. I have no stance on it to be honest. Just making a point...

This really cracks me up...Like a couple people have said, if you seen NBA TV ratings compared to Hockey, the numbers wouldnt compare....If you love hockey, you should love soccer, except the run and use their legs instead of skate and use a stick....To me, and lots of other people both are boring, like watching Golf or a marathon....Talk about single / double overtime? How do you game winning shots? Amare Stoudemire banks in a 3 to send the game into overtime, Stephon Marbury then banks a 3 to win the game in overtime....Stuff is just crazy....And did you see the Orlando game? McGrady had a reverse layup that would still be nice if you seen it 50 years from now, and definately makes Dr. J happy....Not to mention in the SAME GAME, he went up for a dunk where 3 people jumped at the ball and all landed b4 he did, now that is hang time...Most people I know that play hockey are nerds and dont have any athleticism (well where I live)...And yeah the fights are the best part about hockey and there not that good either, I would rather see a street fight, not 2 guys that have to hold onto each others shirts so they dont slip, so they can only punch with one hand...its ok though, but not that great...But if you want that action x100 watch boxing....Also remember that foreign basketball player that punched the referee? He hit him one time, the referee died....Keep in mind these basketball players are massive, look at guys like Jahidi White, Shaq, etc....They would have you shaking in your boots if you had them on your badside...I think it would be cool if they had fights in basketball, but they try to keep order, and keep it civilized, if they allowed them to fight in basketball all you hockey fans would be bashing thinking they are "thugs" and "trash"....It sucks though because everytime a fight does happen to start it is broken up so quickly that neither person gets to do anything! But bottom line, I would rather see a good baseball brawl with both benches cleared than 20 hockey fights (and that is the best part of kockey, lol)....It is obvious that Canada is lopsided toward Hockey, and US is lopsided toward basketball....And VinceCarder listed like 10 canadian people that a famous? how many americans could we name, prolly several thousand easily...but why get into that? Also, VinceCarder, you should be able to respect Vince Carter jumping OVER a 7-foot man and dunking the ball.....Have you EVER seen anything that exciting in hockey? Lemme answer that for you, HEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLL NO!

But what single play does a basketball game posess that makes the fans continually rise from their seats?
Free throws? Time outs for a substitution? Hockey, as I said has a premium on every score. Furthermore,
penalty shots, sudden death, power plays, line changes on the fly... Basketball has nothing like that which is kinda why hockey is more fun, at least in my opinion. When one of the NBA players commits a foul, have them play short handed or make the first basket in overtime be the winner and basketball will then become more exciting.

it is easier to keep somebody from scoring though....if they took a player out after each foul it would end up with 1 player on a team and 0 players on the others, hockey doesnt have near as many penalties plus has more players in the game at a time than basketball does

and tons of plays make basketball fans go crazy....i mean shots at the end of the shot clock, at the end of quarters, game winners, spectacular shots, layups, dunks....when mcgrady threw it off the backboard in last years allstar game ppl had their jaw drop to the ground, basketball has some amazing things happen...Even when teams make a run the crowd goes wild and they come to their feet!

And Mario retired and came back so whats your point? MJ retired the first time to try out baseball, but that didnt work so he resumed basketball, last time he came back was the same reason why Mario came back...They love their respective sports (I know Mario was ill, but he still was retiring anyway)

But lets face it....

Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, Cal Ripken, Michael Jordan.....If everybody had to pick one of these 4, a majority would pick Jordan...And you said previously that these young guys were so minimally talented? You mean the guys that are 6'10" and are more agile than most anybody, and play like they are 6'0"....That my friend, is not minimal talent

Basketball is just a sport that everybody should like (unless they suck, then they have reason to hate it)...You can play by yourself, or with other people...

And no sport has as many recognizable names as basketball, baseball is very close, and football a bit back from baseball, then hockey would come in a good bit after football.....

If you asked everybody in the United States: who won the 2000 Stanley Cup? who won the 2000 nba finals? the nba finals would have a much higher percentage of correct answers

Not hating Hockey, it is a fine sport, but to say it is better than basketball....thats just too canadian/russian for me

Ummm, actually Gretzky put up pre-NHL numbers that will never be reached by anyone. Some records may
be seen as breakable, but those are truely records that I believe will last forever. LeBron hasn't done anything that thousands of other prep players haven't already accomplished. The differnece isn't skill level or talent, it's all hype. Media makes a mountain out of a mole hill.
As far as the rest, it simply depends on where these ?'s were asked. In many other countries, basketball means nothing.

LeBron James is a kid....But could pass as a massive fully grown man....And no, not many people do the things he has done....Normal people dont do between-the-legs dunks in games! This guy is playing against the best high schoolers in the world, and makes them look like crap....have you seen some of the passes he has done? If he wanted to he could have scored over 50 ppg effortlessly, but he plays to win....Gretzky as a high schooler doesnt compare....I mean Travis Best scored 100 points in a high school game, whoop-de-doo! Also you seen how dominant Carmelo Anthony was in college! A freshman drawing double teams and still putting up best numbers....He was second to James last year in High School (not to mention it was James' Junior year)

Hockey=Slow paced, Minimal Scoring..which in other words is boring

Getting ready for a 25 foot slapshot compares to a 25 foot 3 pointer....and if that was the best thing about basketball, i would not like it....

And most non-believers are that way because they have problems (no good-looks, no skill in sport, family issues, etc.) and won't believe because oyu figure "if he were real then I wouldnt be this way...."

All i did was point out the fact... that on the poll.. 49000 people voted... and.. nba had the higher votes for stars... but for excitement... the NHL was higher. Why cant you accept that??
