It is very beautiful - what kind of grade do you think?

It looks near XF to me which makes me think there is a chance it will come back in a bodybag for artificial color - I hope I am wrong and you get an AU grade from PCGS.

here is the original auction. I believe the seller in his description and talked to him at great lengths before I bid on the auction. He likes and handles toned Bust halves so I feel confident with the seller.

I have already had someone offer to buy it (the person I outsnipped) image

I just bought this quarter from the same seller. What the hell, for 50 bucks I thought it was pretty. 1895Barber

he likes the toned coins like that. I have 3 Bust halves that are toned very similar to the quarter you bought that I am selling to him. We have done business with each other in the past so I trust him.

They are both very attractive looking specimens, but, I don't think I can recall ever seeing such nicely, evenly concentrically toned circulated coins. I confess, I don't know didley about "toning" though. image

I personally have never seen that kind of vivid 'album' toning on Vf or so coins, but I guess it could happen naturally.

Interested to hear what PCGS has to say about it -

I am extremely confused...the coin appears to have the same look to the ones (1 kennedy half, 1 morgan, and 1 wash qtr)...sulfer shampoo gives those concentric circles controlled right...i will be posting all coins asap so all can see...

hope yours doesnt get bagged...but Im serious about similarity

Sorry to say that it is cleaned and retoned. Those colors are not natural for a circ FHH. The coin detail grades F15. Value = speculative. Personally I wouldn't buy it.

I'll go on a limb here and say they'll grade it.

    Bill,

I don't have a dead eye; matter of fact the toning issue still confuses the hell out of me. But, I do know that PCGS is in "Chicken Little Wienie Automatic Body Bag" mode right now and, unless the graders have seen a zillion examples like that coin, it's a strong baggie candidate.

Looks heavily cleaned and AT to me. I see alot of Bust material with toning and have noticed that naturally-occurring toning seems to begin at the AU level, not the VF level. The "skin" seems too impaired at lower levels to support attractive toning. I'm not saying it never happens but it's infrequent.

JB......pretty coin but I don't know if the color's real. However, having said that, I don't know squat about how those early pieces tone.

    Good luck with it!!

Sorry...BB...100% guaranteed. I'd walk away from this one if you haven't paid the guy yet. I'd eat the neg and save the dough. Someone out there ruined a beautiful coin.

Just my ever so humble opinion.

    Cheers,

    jbsteven:

If you have access to the coin, please consider posting a second scan. I really think the angle may give a false impression as to the what this coin really looks like. Based on what I see I am not optimistic, but if you want additional comments please consider different scans.

With the usual disclaimer about grading the scan and not the coin, it looks to be in the VF25 to VF30 range (tops). The color is probably not as vibrant in person as it is in the scan and probably is old album toning. From the of the coin, it looks as if it was cleaned, probably 60-75 years ago. I have seen cleaned coins tone in albums even in VF. Will PCGS bodybag the coin? That will depend on the surfaces and if there are signs of cleaning/hairlining (the hairlines would be from the cleaning and not wear from circulation). If there are such signs, it will be bb, if not I think the odds change. Good luck.

    Good evening,

This coin is almost certainly Artificially toned. You don't really think that those colors are placed on a coins surface like that naturally. Unless your picture is not representative of the true color then its AT in my opinion. It is fairly easy to spot especially on the reverse. The obverse looks more respectable. Theat reverse is a real sloppy job. Sorry for the bad new, I have nothing to gain by saying this and am not trying to stir something up.

    JB:

I think the grade is, at best, VF but more like F15. I also think the toning is A/T, but I think it is the opinion of the services that you'd have to contend. I'm fairly certain that PCGS will BB it. I cannot tell if the coin has been harshly cleaned at one point.

I hope that I am wrong, and it is easily possible that I am wrong because it is very hard to judge such matters off a computer image.

But, if you are happy with it, then I say "congrats!" In the end, your opinion matters most.

AT - Body bag - Fine sharpness. I'm afraid that only ANACS among the big three would grade this one.
