What are your thoughts on coin designs that convey motion and fluidity? See what I mean with an exa

1992 Olympic 50c PCGS-MS69

I recently purchased this from David Hall.
I love coins that convey fluidity and motion and a nice centralized design.
Obviously that is why I love Mercs. I also think that Flying Eagle cents and Gobrecht dollars convey
excellent motion. Don't get me wrong, designs like the Peace Dollar which are stationary are great,
but a sense of movement is really interesting. Does anyone else take note of this?

Brian.

    hey brian

i imagine that to be a sub-concious thought process, but it may help to explain the undeniable appeal of the Walking Liberty design. heck, even the eagle on the reverse of that coin seems to be walking!! looking past the aspect of motion suggested by the obverse design of a coin, i think it's very appealing to have an entire figure and not just a bust pictured. hence, the lovely designs embodied by the seated coinage, standing liberty quarter and many comemmerative coins. it just looks nice to see a whole person that may/may not be moving.

You're right, Walkers and SLQs are excellent examples. I think Saints too, but they are walking toward you. Interesting stuff.

    Brian--
That's what attracted me to the "French Walker" that you saw a scan of. The flowing figure of liberty, the graceful look of the movement....

I love that coin! It is reasonably-priced, too.

I like the motion, the subject, and the overall composition.

Here's the same coin in raw proof with a die crack extending from @ 9 o'clock to the center.

So Brian, have you picked up a French Wave yet? They're the last French Franc (2001) and come in silver and gold ... and the whole planchet is wavy! image

    Askari,

Now there is a coin I don't understand. Is there a benefit to that design, or was it a precursor to ... the waffling nature of the minting country? I'm sorry - I really wanted to avoid that detracting remark, but ...

"fluidity and motion" on a Merc, where? Mercs have a beautiful design period.

Gilbert, I think it was symbolic of "waving goodbye" to the Franc ... the troubled passage from beauty to utility. image

I like Keet's example of the movement in the WLH design. The unsettled eagle really gives you a sense of pending movement, which may be more powerful than if it were actually flying.

Yes, the eagle looks like he's ready to jump up.

Walkers are my favorites by a long shot. I'd love to see that design come back to a circulated coin. It would be very interresting to see it come back as a redesigned and smaller half dollar. Maybe the current size of the sac.
