Dime hoard in California

I keep hearing about some guy in California that is hoarding 1844 seated dimes. I've had a number of dealers tell me that he buys every 1844 dime they send him and that he used to run ads in the Coin World WTB all of them. Of course we know the coin is the little Orphan Annie.....but does anyone know anything about this guy? Has anyone ever met him?
What will be the end game?

Nope. A different Dave Thomas.

<< <i>The guy is Dave Thomas. He used to send me emails with his fixed price list. Last I heard he had over 1500 of the 1844 dimes. If true, that makes this "rare" coin a R1. Common. But still high priced because of the hoarding. I think I have 3 of them myself.

This would be the hoarder in California. Does this mean there is more than one hoard and only one is coming to market. I agree with Ray...this would indicate an R1 versus the higher rarity that would have been expected before. Also...at the time Greer published his "The Complete Guide to Seated Dimes" in 1992, there were only two graded MS by the two major services.

Haha. That's what I was thinking too.
out in the end profit wise.
you stretch in way too many cases to become the hoarder only
to find out a small amount of them quickly saturates the market
for the coin.
if you get your jollies out of it, more power to you, but it goes against
the quality over quantity way of thinking in my mind.
think about it for a second. you have hundreds of the same coin
stored in 2x2s in a box sitting in a closet. fun?!? only if you are one
strange duck i suppose.
i thought about doing it for a certain comic book i really really like
that hand a printing of 1000. in the end i bought the finest copy
i ever saw on ebay and had to stretch for it. never saw a better one
yet for sale.

Google - my friend.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.
