Dime hoard in California

I keep hearing about some guy in California that is hoarding 1844 seated dimes. I've had a number of dealers tell me that he buys every 1844 dime they send him and that he used to run ads in the Coin World WTB all of them. Of course we know the coin is the little Orphan Annie.....but does anyone know anything about this guy? Has anyone ever met him?

What will be the end game?

Go well.

Yes, I know him. I'd even be glad to broker your original roll of 1844 dimes!!!

he's not the only hoarder of the annies, that's why they have the mystique.

    got 1844s?

this is actually real common, I also collect several dates in the seated half 's that I own most of the ms coins or nearly all of several variety's. that are graded buy the three major grading company's.

in the high grade lincoln's try and find an 1954 plain lincoln in ms67rd.
I know were all of them are, and some one is hoarding. image

if you asked other board members you will find alot of people collect like this.
may the force be with you.

The guy is Dave Thomas. He used to send me emails with his fixed price list. Last I heard he had over 1500 of the 1844 dimes. If true, that makes this "rare" coin a R1. Common. But still high priced because of the hoarding. I think I have 3 of them myself.

I don't follow the seated liberty dime series - why is it called a little orphan annie? I saw that the mintage is low (~72K)

See the March 1999 Numismatist - everything you wanted to know about this coin. The coin was excessively hyped in the 30s and 40s, then came down greatly in price in the 70s and 80s, now has been going up again as the hoarders have reemerged.

Lathmach, could you PM Dave Thomas' contact information to me. I'd like to see his price list. Thanks.

This would be the hoarder in California. Does this mean there is more than one hoard and only one is coming to market. I agree with Ray...this would indicate an R1 versus the higher rarity that would have been expected before. Also...at the time Greer published his "The Complete Guide to Seated Dimes" in 1992, there were only two graded MS by the two major services.
    Go well.

I seem to recall a group of around 600 of these (1844 dimes) came up for auction within the last three years, offered as a single lot which failed to meet the reserve. The grades in the hoard ranged from cull to AU.

from what i have read on this board, hoarding them never works
out in the end profit wise.

you stretch in way too many cases to become the hoarder only
to find out a small amount of them quickly saturates the market
    for the coin.

if you get your jollies out of it, more power to you, but it goes against
the quality over quantity way of thinking in my mind.

think about it for a second. you have hundreds of the same coin
stored in 2x2s in a box sitting in a closet. fun?!? only if you are one
    strange duck i suppose.

i thought about doing it for a certain comic book i really really like
that hand a printing of 1000. in the end i bought the finest copy
i ever saw on ebay and had to stretch for it. never saw a better one
    yet for sale.

Anyone ever see a 1844 dime love token? I wonder if there are any in the hoard.
Always interested in nice love tokens and engraved coins.

What about SCTV, or "Strange Brew". Isn't one of the brothers real names Dave Thomas?. You know those hoosers, eh, Bob and Dug.

Dave Thomas is a seated dime collector. He is NOT the owner of the hoard!!
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I found the attempted auction of the hoard in the Heritage archives: A single lot of 612 pcs 1844 dimes. All but a handful were certified, the lions share by ANACS. The reserve price was $158,000.
