You have to admit one thing about David Hall...

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
He takes crap well. The good, the bad, the ugly. He stands in there, says what he has to say come what may. We may not always be happy with the responses and the opinions he offers here, but many in his shoes would simply refuse to put up with it after the first few times. He's fulfilling his commitment to participate, and he deserves credit for at least that.

    Russ,

The other thing that you can definitely say based on his posts, is that he needs to take a refresher class on Statistical Analysis. First the idea of comparing two companies population reports to suggest that statistically, one is looser. Now, using a limited and biased sample to prove his graders can cross coins.

My stats professor would have failed him.

I agree with that statement. I do admire him for being willing to discuss the issues to some extent. Many CEOs would rather get another $10000 ivory backscratcher and a new BMW than dare talk to a common person. That said, I don't necessarily agree with all his positions! And I think Laura's idea of a public moderated debate is excellent and I would love to see it happen. Maybe bring NGC in, too.

I am impressed by his willingness to participate. I wish more CEO's would say what they really think. The problem is......most customer's don't really want hear the truth.

Not talking about PCGS or this forum....just my own general experience.
    Go well.

    Good point and post Russ.

David really is in a very difficult situation - my feeling is that many complaints are perfectly legitimate and others are not (I wont dare give an opinion as to which are which!). And, even if PCGS were perfect , he'd still get plenty of complaints.

I agree with Russ ( I Know that made your day there fella)

Halls' approach, while different than the one I might have taken appears to be somewhere between "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" and "Ready, fire, aim".

Definative, firm, but tactful would appear to have been more the order of the day. But I guess after hearing all of this whinning - who could blame him?

The stockholders in about 12 weeks maybe?

    Hey Eddie,

That's a cute little portrait. You have that done at Sears during the last kiddie special?

Russ - well said. David is in a tough spot, and though I sometimes don't agree with him, at least he can take the heat.

At times, however, he may wish to "wrap his package" a bit more carefully. I am not very good at this myself, but often, the words used to deliver the message often influence how the message itself is perceived.

There is simply no question that he is in a difficult spot. In many ways, he can take alot of credit for the rise and role TPG companies have in the US coin market. However, it is still an evolutionary process and the grading services really need to offer greater services with respect to authentication and grading of coins. There are still far too many varities PCGS just doesn't recognize and its a mistake to believe that collectors are not that sophisticated to demand attribution for rare coin varieties. I won't bother with examples...

In addition, just look at the number of coins that are traded today on a sight unseen basis. Further innovation is required to separate quality from the common. I would expect PCGS to expand its services if it plans to increase its market share. Mr. Hall needs to take PCGS to the next level before the competition.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
