Did anyone see the 1794 Dollar in the upcoming Bowers sale? PCGS net Grade?

Is this an example of a unofficial "net" grade by PCGS? The coin looks like a strong VF, but some major handling marks. Hence the lower grade.

I also would like to see a picture of this cull dollar! what a piece of junk! image

  • PCGS does this with some of the rarer coins. Almost any other coin you bet your booty they wouldn't net grade it, they'd bag it.

The lot is #4001, in case anyone has troubles finding it online... The coin certainly doesn't look choice by any definition. But, let's not be too hard on PCGS (or any other service) because you can't grade an ED like you can a Morgan -- right? Likewise, you can't grade a 1794 ED like you can with the rest of the ED's.

The Mint was fraught with problems in the early days; coining these large cartwheels was especially problematic due mostly to the insufficient pressure generated by the hand press and to the lousy planchets.

BTW, speaking of ED's, did you notice the PLUS signs in this week's greysheet for EF specimens?

    EVP,

I looked as a really nice 1794 at a show in FL about 15 yrs ago. It was a very nice XF, at 45,000. What would it go for today?

If the coin is accurately graded and eye appealing, I'd say it'll go for anywhere between $110K and $125K pretty easily.
