1964 Kennedy half - is this one real or AT?

I really have no idea (not my coin, BTW). Is it real or baked, and why/why not?

Hmmm.....I kinda gunshy nowdays and that reminds me of some of the easyman/swimmer coins discussed lately so I'm not going to jump up and yell it's real tone.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    Russ,

The almost white obverse is a plus. The colors on the reverse look kind of funky. Still I would guess it is real. imho

looks pretty fake, but have seen worse.

    I'd give it a 3 on the

    10 = anaconda

    1 = atswimmer

    scale

You're right Dog97. That reverse looks exactly like one of the ASwimmer coins!

That's definately an interesting one. The color(hues) look ok but they are colors you migh expect to see on a Roosie instead of a Kennedy. That's one I would really need to see in person to make a final judgement. I believe that one is raw, correct?

    Yep, it's raw.

    Thanks Russ.

Didn't that one sell a couple of weeks ago and just resurfaced on auction again by the same seller indicating that it was returned?

I don't know if it sold previously, but it is currently listed.

It almost looks like it could be an envelope toned coin, although if so, you would expect the obverse to have a little more color, particularly around the periphery.

In the auction listing it says end roll toning. Do envelope and end roll look similar?

    Paul,

I'm still learning myself, but from what I understand, toned on only one side is a good thing. It usually indicates end roll toning. But, I'd assume that coin doctors also make them this way, since monster toning on both sides is considered a red flag.

To clarify something; it's not listed by swimmer or easyman.

I would pass on this one. I don't think it looks like endroll. I don't like the way the purple is splotchy looking.

Colors don't look to blend together, just kind of looks like they were put there. Even if you tell me it's in a pcgs holder, I would still pass.

End roll toning will almost always have some kind of geometric pattern produced from the paper fold creases. Technically, envelope and end roll would be the same because the paper from the envelope and the roll are basically the same material. If you or someone kept opening the end of the roll thereby moving the folds and creases each time, then you would probably not get the well defined geometric lines that develop when the roll is left alone undisturbed for a decade or two or three. So yes, this could be an end roll that was disturbed at some point before being removed. IMO, though, a true end roll needs to have some geometric pattern visable, otherwise it is basically just envelope toning. I hope I've made some sense.

I have a 66 SMS kennedy I picked up in a deal with a bunch in a box all in 2x2 flips this Kennedy was in an SMS set at the bottem of the box and the obv is a light blue that goes into a gold it starts at the rim at 9:00 and goes over the entire coin to 3:00 to where it is the gold color it goes up and over all lettering but the rev. is very nice as it only has a hint of gold around the lettering (I wish I had a scanner)
so I dont think it was played with because I cracked it out of the SMS set myself but you never know The reason I bring this up is the end of roll factor would not apply on this one as it was in the set any Idea?

    Paul,

As I said, I'm still learning and really know very little about this stuff (thus the reason for threads like this), but if I were to guess, I say that the coin you described might be album toning; particularly since you mentioned that a bit of the gold toning appears on the basically untoned side.

But, who knows. This stuff is very confusing for me.

Hey Russ, cut the "I am so humble" crap. You are very knowledgeable about toning and coins in general, based on your posts. You know and I know that the Kennedy you imaged is totally AT. Makes me sick seeing that unnatural toning.

Now, I have a suprise for you. It's a lovely '64 Kennedy with REAL toning. Wanna see it? I will make some images and post them soon. My images will settle this whole AT thing once and for all.

Also, the coin that I will soon post is for sale if you want it. I am asking $10 for it. This is not a joke.

Hey Mike, you are being out-voted. Classics, Dog97 and I all agree the coin looks like a ASwimmer coin. Nice try........image

The coin has been sold on Ebay recently. I recognize the pimple on Pres. Kennedy's cheekbone.

I just wanna know if a coin is wildly colored from being cleaned a long time ago and maybe just stored poorly?
And how do we know what colors are put there intentionally and not by happenstance.
Its a sticky wicket this AT vs NT debate.

    Hey Eddie,

I wish I were very knowledgeable about toning but I'm not, which is why I ask a lot of questions. Thank you for your input, though, I will certainly give it all of the consideration that it merits.

    imo, a-t, & market unacceptable.

you can create perfectly similar toning by stacking 2 kennedies together, putting them on a hot-plate. the bottom side facing the heat will tone, the top-side will not (unless it's cooked for too long or too hot).

do not try this at home ..... unless you have a hot plate.

DCAM, you can continue to parse words all you want, but what you say is not what they others said, to quote you "its looks exactly like", Dog said reminds him of one his, and classics said looks like one. Neither one of them said what you did.

The coin is clearly AT and the work does look just like ASwimmer's work. Relayer, where did you buy the coin?

Well if it is AT it's chemical or something...at least in my opinion. I baked a nickel/dime/Kennedy from a proof set that I broke open for an Ike to see what baked coins looked like. From this experience at least one side was a bright blue and the other side was a bright gold multi-colored rainbow. From doing this I at least now have an idea on what to look for...and no I have no intention on selling or anything.

I wish I could post a picture of them but I am without a camera until I decide to go out and buy one.
