    Questionable color

Beautiful examples. I really love early federal coinage and seated coinage.

The blue-purple combo is interesting and probably what would cause issues if submitted.

Blue, red, purple, etc. are just colors. Only when humans get involved do these colors morph into sources of strife and discontent.

There was no shortage of glee when Bessent was exceeding his statutory authority to strike certain politically inspired pieces earlier this year. Did we really need half a dozen threads about the same topic? Ironically those posters now take issue with this thread. Why is it okay for one side to have politically motivated threads (even if implicitly) but this one is not okay? A thread about blue toning is just as politically neutral as praising some of this year's other coinage. If you argue that this thread goes beyond coins whether overtly or implicitly, I would say the same about the $250 and semiquincentennial $1 coin threads.

    Here’s the I smell a rat story
I owned this coin for five years as a MS66 CAC
Sent it to PCGS twice, most recently six months ago, for reconsideration for specimen or upgrade

Then I got a good offer and sold it
    Now almost immediately it’s a SP66 CAC

I smell a rat- and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth regarding our host and “insider influence.” I know I cannot call into the grading room and influence a decision but obviously there are people who can. You know who you are….

I think that a grade/designation change in such a short time period on such an easily recognizable coin, is at best, inexcusable.

Edited to add: I’m confused by your time line, as I see that the coin was auctioned in January of this year. When you said “Then I got a good offer and sold it”, did you mean that you were the consignor to this sale? :

I sent my entire collection of dollars to PCGS including this one, all my proof Morgans and proof Peace

It was a concierge level walk through involving JD and very expensive by the way

I then sold the coin and the person who I sold it to placed it up for auction

Subsequently it is now a SP66

All this happened in a very short 6-9 month window

And it’s not like this was a new discovery coin- this coin has been well known from its raw days with Catherine Bullowa and then on to Pogue

So yeah I have some hard feelings about this one….

Thank you and I’m sorry for your distasteful experience. I understand about it not being a discovery coin. When you posted it, I recognized the coin immediately, as anyone who has seen it, should.

Unsure- went for around $1.6 at auction in the MS holder. Now that it’s a mate for the specimen 1794 dollar my guess would be significantly more?

If I'm reading the Price guide correctly that's about 5,850,000.00 more as an SP66 which I would assume to equate to around a couple mill difference. Not even a phone call, Shirley the grader knew what he was a looking at.

It is unfortunate, and I understand your frustration. The coin does have an appearance consistent with many of the other early federal specimens coins encapsulated by PCGS. Had you ever sought a regrade or redetermination of MS v. SP designation?
