United States Mint Announces New Circulating Coin Program

WQuarterFreddieWQuarterFreddie Posts: 3,345 ✭✭✭✭✭

Mint just issued their press release for new quarters.

I like the fact they included cheerleading as a sport!

I heard they are changing the metal composition of the nickel to something cheaper that copper and nickel. I would think zinc over steel would make sense. It worked in 1943 and might just re-invigorate the market for nickels. The problem is we need a new name for the 5 cent piece... A Fipence? nah. too english. How about a Stinc (Steel and Zinc)? ;) We need super AI to come up with something new. While they are at it they might as well redesign the coin - I think Jefferson would agree.

The Washington quarter type set groweth.

I barely was able to collect the P&D set of 50 States, let alone Territories.

This is just getting out of hand. There are too many design changes, and it is getting old. I do like the new dimes and hope they stay. They are really hard to grade, though, since the obverse is so busy.

This thread is about quarters and halves. Not sure how you got nickels out of the article 🤣😂

They let the genie out of the bottle - never going back to 'just normal stuff' again lol.

Next up planets, countries, elements, beaches of America, Great Lakes, it just goes on.

I was initially dismissive of this series, but if the Mint markets these well, it could help bring younger collectors into the hobby. There are millions of kids enrolled in the long list of sports on the release list.

Not just kids. Also adults who play golf!

I was all in for the states/territories and national parks, but not so much for the women and sports. It is just too much of a chase. That said, I was going to comment that they should focus on sports that are a part of the Olympics for the 2028 releases, but learned lacrosse will be an event after a 120 year hiatus, and flag football, for both men and women, will debut in LA, so I guess they do have it pretty well covered.

Why are they calling Gridiron Football "American Football?"

I personally think that it would be nice if, whenever they finish with one special quarter dollar series, they took a break and used the classic Washington/Eagle design of 1932 for a year or two. They should certainly do it for 2032, perhaps with a 1932-2032 dual date.

Who cares? If the current scenario continues, none of them will go into circulation, and they will sell the rolls to collectors and spectators at premium prices.

I have been much of modern coin fan at high prices, and the current situation makes them even more unattractive.

The cynic in me thinks the folks in Augusta, GA, will somehow manage to get their logo on a "limited edition" golf quarter. . .the youth golfer already resembles a Drive, Chip, and Putt participant . I like the new Washington obverse. Kennedy's barely visible teeth seem unnecessary.

My guess: Canadian football also is played on a gridiron. And what we Yanks call “football” isn’t the same as what the rest of the world calls “football”. So “American football” avoids misunderstanding.

Ummmm, so we are naming coins for the rest of the world? It is an American coin, also there is "soccer"

Agree that it would be cool for a 2032 original design w/ eagle, but would prefer the dual date to be 1732-2032 :+1: Let it be a coin commemorating Washington's birth instead of commemorating the coin itself.

The Semi Quincentennial coins were also supposed to for circulation, but very few non collectors saw them. The only way collectors could get the vast majority of them was from the mint at more than face value.

I am very cynical and very disappointed with the mint. It has become a vastly overpriced monopoly seller.

The problem is that so many people use plastic nowadays there is very little change being paid out. Even I do it nowadays because it is easier and faster in a drive thru.

Well there’s no sense in complaining about not getting new coins in change if you aren’t using cash.

I’ve gotten dozens of SemiQ quarters in change just from morning coffee purchases. Plenty out there.

Stop by banks and ask if they received any new coin rolls. Best way to find them.

In my experience, explaining that you are a coin collector and need them for your collection helps the employees understand why you want them. They are usually very interested in helping you.

    Also, it promotes our hobby.
