New Orleans is my all time favorite mint to collect. Of course pre 1830's coins means Philly is the only mint around. My only problem with San Fran coins is that it can be very hard to find early period coins that have attractive surfaces and, or are not damaged in some way. Carson City coins will always hold a special cachet but the number of collectors who pursue that mint often make even common coins over expensive. james

That is why I prefer San Francisco....the challenge and history of the West opening up.

I don't favor one mint over the others. They all minted coins that I covet!

New Orleans mint Morgans may be notorious for being a melting pot of strike variety but I think they have a uniqueness (most) mints don't typically match.

Machin's Mill is a well known mint which produced genuine and counterfeit coins during the post Revolutionary War period. This piece was made for Vermont, but it has a reverse which was used with a counterfeit British half penny.

My favorite mint is the first Philadelphia Mint followed by Dahlonega. I've collected early U.S. coins as types and as a series for many years.

The Dahlonega Mint has grabbed my interest for a long time. It was years before I knew how to pronounce "Dahlonega." Unlike Charlotte, it is still a small southern town which off the beaten path. It's a fun place to visit. Given the circumstances, the Dahlonega Mint often produced pretty decent coins. Here are a few of my favorites.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Dahlonega - ironically the only one I've really visited too.

    Beautiful place!

Me too! I am currently collecting Connecticut coppers, and especially like the 1788's from Machin's mill.

The Vermont posted by BillJones is the best I’ve ever seen of that variety. The reverse die must have been is its best shape then. This 1788 Ryder 19 was struck by Machins Mill. Nice color, Been spooned and holed

In spite of their high mintages, Philadelphias. When looking at graded populations vs. price guides, they are undervalued in the Barber series.

    I have but one choice………..

Philly is the only mint for me. The others didn’t use screw presses.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
