OGH Seated Quarter from GACC

BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,726 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am now a 99% world coin collector but some of you may recall me from my No Motto Half Eagle days. Going to a coin show in the US is usually unproductive aside from the conversations, grading and auction lot viewing. I do like to buy a nice US coin when I find it, especially beautiful circulated Seated and gold coins.

Today I found this gorgeous 25c in the literal back corner of the room for a good price. Happy to add it to my box of 5 or so US coins.

It doesn't get much better than that! Always nice to find a good deal in an "out of the way" area.

I wouldn't have been shocked by a gold CAC on that one.

If you wouldn't have showed the grade, I would've guessed 45. Nice looking coin.

I’m sure this is a fantastic coin and I congratulate you on your purchase, but I have to point out to others that this is AI-generated and manipulated imagery.

The biggest tell is that the lines and lettering on the shield are all wrong (worse in the slab shot than the close-up). There is no doubt a productive use for AI in coin photography, but I think it should be explicitly disclosed when used.

Yes I used a program to generate the image. Not sure I need to disclose that since I’m not selling it but no problem sharing that. I’d say the program did a hell of a job merging 6 images together to capture the look accurately without the need for an advanced set up to get the color right from all angles. Coinstudio.ai for those interested.

I may be proven wrong, but I think most people here want to know whether they’re looking at a photograph of a coin or a digitally-generated representation of a coin.

The hobby and industry depend on details (die/variety diagnostics, surface quality, letter/rim sharpness, etc.). I worry that the forum will become a showroom of AI-manipulated images rather than coins, to our collective detriment.

This is by no means an attack on you personally; I’ve just been noticing these kind of images popping up on other social media and I just happened to catch it in the images in this thread.

Agree! All AI is not created equal. To be clear, I did not generate an image which was created from nothing. AI in this case follows a routine set of tasks to merge six images together taken from different angles. Photoshop does the same thing to allow for lighting and imaging from multiple angles to merge into one without having to have the actual light set up to accomplish the task.

I was going to say that was a really nice looking quarter, but I will amend my initial thought to "that is a nice looking image" of whatever it is. ;)

Something must be fishy about the image. When I try to open it up into another window to zoom in, I get a security warning on my work computer.

Kinda gotta agree because the AI image looks 50+ [my first thought was why no gold sticker] whereas the photograph looks like a pretty nice 40

I feel better. I was wondering if my grading skills were that far off for Seated Quarters. I too thought it looked a lot better than a 40.

In saw it as 40/45 based on the obverse strike.

    Regardless, nice coin and pickup!
