Thinking of selling this early numbered ultra rare white label PCGS rattler.

This is a PCGS 1.0?

Money comes and goes, but once your rare slab is gone, it's gone.
I suggest you keep it.
I have a few of them. I bought them over 13 years ago.
If the market is heated up for them as recent threads imply, I would cash out.
You thinking Great Collections?
Just curious. They seem to be getting great results with these.
Have enjoyed seeing all the cool early holders you’ve shared here! You’ve certainly assembled an impressive collection of them.
Best of luck with this one if you decide to sell it.
@oreville Why are you selling this particular slab? The least interesting coin?
Cha-ching!

I actually forgot I bought this for $364.25 on 1/20/2013 from Heritage,
They sell well, not a bad idea, and yes, it’s the 1.0

Based on the shape of the "5", it appears to be a PCGS Museum GEN 1.0.

Hey welcome back Billet7!
Where have you been?
Neat serial number. Save yourself all the hassle and send it to me, I'll double your money!
Seriously though, neat old holder. I expect you would do well at auction. As you are aware, these have been selling for obscene money.
At least the plastic and labels aren't holding a really cool coin hostage. Take your Obscene Profit™ while you can.

Actually, the reason I bought it in 2013 was because of the CAC gold sticker. I did not realize it was a PCGS 1.0 ultra rare and earliest generation rattler at the time. I totally forgot about it until I viewed my Heritage “collection.”
I am sure I never sold it before as I treasured the gold stickered PCGS slabs. I was in shock when I saw it.
I was curious so I looked up the PCGS cert number. I thought it might show the date that the coin was slabbed. But it doesn't, so I guess PCGS does not share this information. In what year, roughly, do you think this nickel was slabbed?
Febuary 1986.
It was used for only one month: PCGS's first month of operation which as Oreville says in February 1986.

Re: when the coin was slabbed.
According to the PCGS Museum of Coin Holders, the GEN 1.0 Holder (Early FEB-1986):

And, according to OldSlabHolders.com:

Hard to believe we are discussing rarity of a plastic slab produced in 1986 by our hosts as opposed to this being the venue for discussion regarding the U.S. Coin Forum. Thinking maybe its time that our hosts insert another option to discuss primarily Old Holders Discussions.
@oreville Great Collections has a common date Morgan in a MS64 holder over $5k right now. According to the description, PCGS was believed to start numbering at 1080001. By GC's logic, your coin is likely one of the first thousand coins graded by PCGS.
Such a cool coin !!! I only recently learned of these older white labels and I absolutely love them !!! Let us know if it goes to auction as I would gladly be a happy bidder !!! 😎

I am hesitant in selling this rare slabbed nickel as i would have to pay a huge 28% capital gains tax unless I first relocate to Puerto Rico.
Some unfortunate turns of events caused me to sell everything (wife abruptly left.) It was really hard on me, took me a few years to get back at it. Sadly, I sold all my old holder collection, including all the white tags, slabs, doilies, rattlers, etc. I now own one Doily, as a memento. I can’t pay what people are asking for those anymore (especially the white tags…wow! Wish I had those back.)

I am not an accountant and do not know your state law, but would it be possible to do a 1031 exchange and buy some coins you like more now?
Taxes would be might last concern; if you can get crazy money, get that and talk to your accountant on the best tax minimization strategy. Considering what similar issues have sold for in the right auction, I'd strike while the iron is hot.
Cool slab and these are very much in demand so I'm sure it would do well in an auction.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
How does the value of these first-generation PCGS rattler slabs compare to the first-generation black NGC slabs?

Last I checked the auction record for a white 1.0 was just less than $5k, the auction record for an NGC black is over $17k. Blacks are more rare.
Regency PCGS are in the $5k ballpark also.
Oreville’s slab with a gold sticker would garner a lot of attention.

Your info is a bit outdated, the last PCGS 1.0 sold last Sunday at GC for almost 34K. Here is the thread on that coin. https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1125690/another-pcgs-white-label-gc-auction-ended-9-20#latest

Oreville IS an accountant. He has also made comments in the past that coins no longer qualify for tax-deferred exchanges anymore.

Is that because it was the earliest slab still in existence? I remember something about that. I didn’t include it, since it’s an outlier.
My data is out of date though.

Should we start addressing you as señor Oreville?
Too bad they killed the like kind exchange except for real estate.
I recall how you were an early fan of these old slabs. You still have your memories as well as your reputation with us old timers.
I remember when you and I bought those in the HA sale.
Could use it for my white rattler grading set - I have a MS64 and MS66. How much??
Forgot to mention, mine are also 1938-D Buff's but with only a green CAC on each.
The very early slab number was certainly a factor in the final hammer, how much only the bidders would be able to say. But other early cert numbered holders like the one in the op would likely see a value bump from this recent result even if it is somewhat of an outlier.

This is another 1938-D buffalo nickel in PCGS MS-65 rattler with a gold sticker I bought at the Heritage sale in January 2013. It set me back for all of $123.00 back then. There are even more gold stickered buffalo nuckels I bought back in 2013. Some were under $100.00.

Up to 2012 (not sure of the exact year), section 1031 exchange was allowed but afterwards US Congress changed the law no longer permitting any like kind exchange except for real estate.
Donnie and the gang destroyed it in 2017 with the Tax Cut and Jobs Act.
The only remaining option is to possibly place collectibles into a self-directed Roth IRA or to wait until death in which a spouse can receive a free stepped up basis of the collectible.
That’s no fun. The IRA approach is dead after the piece had already appreciated significantly (not to mention income caps) and you should live to enjoy it. By killing off the 1031 exchange, collectors are left in a bad position. I also never understood the rationale of the special 28% capital gains tax which taxes purchasers of luxury goods at a higher rate than gamblers. Why is the ANA lobbying for us for fair tax treatment?
*Why is the ANA ***NOT*** lobbying for a more favorable tax treatment for collectors?
Why didn’t you just edit your previous post?
