Another thing to remember about that supposed "phantom 1 second" is that although the NFL will state that the Stadium Clock is the official game time the Side Judge or one of on field officials is tasked with keeping the official time. Logically, in an instance like what happened last night he will have the last word. In this case, his time apparently showed some fraction of time remaining, at odds with the field clocks which is precisely why it's done that way.
I understand we are in a Politically inspired age of Conspiracy Theories and Theorists, but like most they are all just garbage.
after watching that grand larceny last night, my visceral reaction was, where is sports headed
we've now entered the realm of outcomes being flipped and little schools having the biggest W in their history stripped from them because the clock on the field purportedly wasn't in sync with the one on the telecast
i wonder what inventive way we'll be played for suckers next
watching those U of M fans storm the field like they just won the natty after stealing a game from an in-state, 4-TD dog has to be one of the most bush league spectacles i've ever witnessed
i hope Michigan only wins 5 games so they're sitting on the toilet come bowl season, i hope they lose to Michigan St, and i hope Ohio St dismembers them from the jump and leaves their starters in for 4 quarters

Maybe some people are ok with only relevant teams being called different but I'm not, sports should be fair across the board
It matters to me because it impacts the importance.
I’ve also seen the actual replay video. Something anyone can. I’ve also seen the stadium clock overlay on video. So when you look at the review screen what do you think?
If you’re after fairness then I would point out that football penalties are quite subjective and appear situationally arbitrary.

The clock expired to the point that the announcers even said the game was over but apparently they were looking at the same clock everyone but the refs were looking at
I didn't watch the game, I'm just going by what every YouTube and sports show is saying and that was Western Michigan got robbed lol

Funny, we all see the same thing and come up with totally different interpretations, I witness that all the time. I have to ask myself questions. Why do both the NFL and NCAA state that the on-field clock is the official time but still default to a Referee keeping the game time, which is in reality the official time??
- - - I suspect 2 reasons: a power interruption would lose the time - and - experience has taught that the on-field clock is not always in sync with the actual “true” time.
The other question for me is why people in general have grown to be so suspicious about everything??

Penalties have something to do with what I wanted to say when you spoke of the importance of holding this imaginary line against an assault on the integrity of the game. The announcers and the clock encoded into the broadcast stream appear to not be as accurate as one might want for second-resolution. When I saw the posts here about it I looked for what I could find and the conclusion I came to was that... the replay showed the ball was touched by a player which jumped from out of bounds and by rule the play was dead then and on the replay video it showed 1 second on the clock.
If people are looking to get things right then I think the official clock that was shown on the released replay video is the official one. If you're looking to make the internal workings of technology understandable to the guy who lives and breathes college football - that may never happen.
I want to see millisecond resolution or it didn't happen! What if a player is moving really fast relative to the ball? does time dilate? So much to unravel. For what it's worth I guess the MAC accepted it, but I didn't look to understand what might be in their best interests there.

There is nothing imaginary about what I said because at first glance it looked completely out of touch with fairness, Michigan being relevant or not

The line is imaginary. Meaning there’s no objective or literal line whether integrity fades away or reappears. I’m further saying that this isn’t the hole in the dam to put your finger in. I didn’t mean you to think I was saying that anything you said was imaginary. The concept of unfairness or favoritism in sports undermines the integrity of the game. I agree with that. I think that in many ways the game lacks integrity in material ways now.
I can see why people are irritated though as it is confusing and the responses by analysts are mixed with those of experts without much care in the media and we end up with conjecture masquerading as fact.

Yeah no conflict of interest there.
I watched the game and couldn’t believe the uncalled facemask. Obvious because it lasted 5-6 seconds and ended with a twist of the helmet.
Western Michigan kicked a field goal because it wasn’t called when they should have had a first down somewhere around the Michigan 15 yard line.
@Darin, there are so many un-called penalties in every game that it isn’t really worth discussing. It is always brought up, like you have, when an uncalled penalty is viewed as being the deciding factor in a game.

Texas vs Ohio State is without question the highlight of next week, I'm really looking forward to that
Mike Pereira came out and said if that had been an NFL game, Western Michigan would have won. if there's a discrepancy between the replay center & tv network video, the replay always defers to the latter. please stop making sense, Mike. telling 50 jillion people that their eyes have been deceived and that a mystery clock that has never been referenced before in their entire football-watching lives is about to nullify a monumental upset is the sort of thing that really grinds my gears and keeps my cynicism alive and well. i thought it was a crock the moment i saw what happened and my mind hasn't been changed -- especially after hearing what he said.
i loath the construct of today's college football as a whole. everything about it feels unrecognizable and wrong compared to what i grew up with. Bryce Underwood, who sucks, is getting paid more than Western Michigan's budget -- for its entire department. and then we have a team like LSU. they just boatraced another school that used to win natties, yet it somehow thinks it needs the assistance of guys who attempted to play professional football but couldn't make it. that's right, ladies and gentlemen, from college ------> NFL to NFL --------> college in the year 2026. and then we have all of the times a player is mentioned on tv and they go through the laundry list of schools he once played for and the fact that he's been able to legally buy a beer for a decade. i kid you not, there is a WR for Arkansas who is 31.
perhaps you guys love the evolution, idk. but for me personally, it does nothing but place a repugnant taste in my mouth. and witnessing that bullshit last Saturday night does nothing to help matters. i used to love college football because it provided authenticity and purity that the NFL never could, but those days are forever gone.

I prostitute it for my enjoyment, betting on it and watching top tier matchups
The honor, glory and true rivalries with the same players facing each other for a college career are all a thing of the past
Again I use it for what it is, there is nothing real to invest yourself in
@galaxy27 said: a mystery clock that has never been referenced before
I would 100% disagree with that. There have been a number of times when an on-field official says that that stadium clock is incorrect, something like that, and the time is with the Referee or in the booth. That’s the whole reasoning behind having two time sources.
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety," --- Benjamin Franklin
a mystery clock that no one except the replay center is privy to that altered the outcome of a game when it shouldn't have
there is a large, habitable spacecraft and scientific laboratory that orbits Earth, yet for some reason that's as mysterious as the mystery clock in the Big 10 replay center, we can't watch a football game exuding synchronicity to avoid a situation that compels viewers to question the integrity of the product
it's the epitome of stupidity, and it even insults the intelligence of people who are stupid
and i'll even take it a step further. from everything i've heard and read, from Western Michigan's HC to the AD to the president of the university, they are all reacting to that outcome as if they are the most noble human beings ever produced. i'd like to think they are just a group of stand-up individuals. but then i put myself in their shoes. i'm telling you guys right now, if i had been Western Michigan's coach, you would have needed a calculator to tally up the amount i was about to be fined before my mouth opened. in no way, shape or form would i have tolerated what just happened to my team without letting my voice be heard. but that is not happening from a single higher-up at that school.
in my humble, yet very cynical opinion, that's because....
what goes on behind closed doors is as secretive as the clock used to screw Western Michigan. when it comes to money, my trust level scrapes the bottom of the barrel. garden-variety individuals, businesses, politicians, athletic organizations, doesn't matter. again, we're talking about a school with an 8$ mil athletic budget. the 1.5M check that Michigan just cut them represents almost a fourth of that. it behooves them to play the role of sycophant.
have i mentioned that the current landscape of college football disgusts me greatly?

a. Game Clock. Playing time shall be kept with a game clock that may be
either a stopwatch operated by the line judge, back judge, field judge or side

perhaps you guys love the evolution, idk. but for me personally, it does nothing but place a repugnant taste in my mouth. and witnessing that bullshit last Saturday night does nothing to help matters. i used to love college football because it provided authenticity and purity that the NFL never could, but those days are forever gone.

@Maywood
allow me to expound
a mystery clock that no one except the replay center is privy to that altered the outcome of a game when it shouldn't have
there is a large, habitable spacecraft and scientific laboratory that orbits Earth, yet for some reason that's as mysterious as the mystery clock in the Big 10 replay center, we can't watch a football game exuding synchronicity to avoid a situation that compels viewers to question the integrity of the product
it's the epitome of stupidity, and it even insults the intelligence of people who are stupid
and i'll even take it a step further. from everything i've heard and read, from Western Michigan's HC to the AD to the president of the university, they are all reacting to that outcome as if they are the most noble human beings ever produced. i'd like to think they are just a group of stand-up individuals. but then i put myself in their shoes. i'm telling you guys right now, if i had been Western Michigan's coach, you would have needed a calculator to tally up the amount i was about to be fined before my mouth opened. in no way, shape or form would i have tolerated what just happened to my team without letting my voice be heard. but that is not happening from a single higher-up at that school.
in my humble, yet very cynical opinion, that's because....
what goes on behind closed doors is as secretive as the clock used to screw Western Michigan. when it comes to money, my trust level scrapes the bottom of the barrel. garden-variety individuals, businesses, politicians, athletic organizations, doesn't matter. again, we're talking about a school with an 8$ mil athletic budget. the 1.5M check that Michigan just cut them represents almost a fourth of that. it behooves them to play the role of sycophant.
have i mentioned that the current landscape of college football disgusts me greatly?
I agree with all the above, it sucks.
All about $$$ now.
I'm watching FINEBAUM....LSU callers are nuts. Clemson getting hammered, too funny.
it makes me want to hit up an Auburn-style mardi gras and get obliterated
Galaxy…. not only a mystery clock nobody had ever heard of before…. but a Big Ten mystery clock.
Here’s something interesting that was on yahoo.

@Darin
the entire situation is dripping with filth
