Using eBay Authenticity Guarantee Program….lets see how it goes

edited September 11, 2026 4:58PM in U.S. Coin Forum

Well I just purchased my 1st coin on eBay that meets the limit where the new Authenticity Guarantee Program is implemented. The coin was shipped today. I wonder how many days it will add to delivery and how fast the turnaround will be once they receive it.
The coin is a raw one and the pictures, at least the rev were really not very good. I’m curious on how it will look in hand. The seller did say if I wasn’t happy they would take a return.
Here are the pictures from the listing. Let me know what you think.

It is a genuine “three legger” if that is your concern.

I know it’s a real 3 legged. I’ve probably handled around 100 over the years. I’m just wondering how the new “process” will work and how much time it will add to delivery.

Yup, that’s it. It was listed as a 3 legged. More interested in the new eBay process and of course, what it will actually look like in hand.

Nice try, though. Can you identify all of the characteristics with that photo ? Moth eaten leg ? Die scratch (pissing Buffalo) ? I see a missing leg. And even if it is authentic, how does eBay magically guarantee it ?

Not to mention they are shipping it to PCGS.

But you know. They love to hate ebay, even though they are possibly responsible for hundreds of thousands (millions) of small business successes.

Ok- "a question", it is. That still reflects poorly on the seller, doesn't it? I mean- you wouldn't question whether or not Stack's or GC would be sending the coin they pictured, would you?

Costs are going up for sellers, feepay will need to pay for this program somehow. I wonder whom their authenticators are and how many er, decades (weeks?) of looking at coins for authenticity they have. I wouldn't question GC or Stacks (as suggested by MasonG above) as they know their buis, but feepay? They have ignored my scam and counterfeit coins since, well, they opened shop. Why now? And for free to sellers? NOT.

I also have one that just hit the waiting room at PCGS.
Very curious how long it’s going take to get outa there as well…
This is a coin I bought.
As far as selling goes I think I’ll be going with the $499 and below listings for awhile.
Until it’s better known if it’s going to work smoothly or be a fiasco.

Maybe read about the card authenticity guarantee and you might find that nothing you are suggesting has come to pass.

And PCGS is doing the authentication, so of what, exactly, are you accusing our hosts?

Good luck, hope you are right. There are already going to be days to weeks of delays for customers to get their purchases. And pardon me for being a skeptic but I don't believe feepay does this out of the goodness of their heart. I am pretty sure this is step 1 to increasing fees for sellers but we will see. Maybe feepay really is this altruistic corporation with no incentive to max out benefits for their shareholders but what do I know?

Again, they've been doing it with cards for years with the sister company of PCGS.

Edited to add: It's been nearly 5 years for cards and they started cards AFTER they were doing it with sneakers and watches.

Actually, that's not what my sig line says. But thank you.

I didn't make up the fact that they've been doing it with cards for almost FIVE years. If it's a prelude to raising the very reasonable fees, they certainly are taking their time about it.

FWIW, I just asked AI about feepay fees for sports cards:

That is quite a few % above FV fees charged for coins. Looks like they have already priced in the authentication for cards, so still skeptical that they can hold coins below 10%.

Yes, they are higher in must categories. And that's why there is a threshold. The threshold for cards is $200 while it is $500 for coins.

Do the math: 12.5% of $200= $25. 9% of $500= $45. They are actually getting more fees for the coins that are covered than they are for the cards.

But, of course, you can't envision a world in which ebay did a good thing...

I have no biases except that what I sell is not suitable for ebay because of the fees, etc. So I have no cards in the game and completely on the outside. I am just concerned that ebay is a publicly traded company that will be trying to maximize the profit for their shareholders, and hence they are not going to leave money on the table. This is not how publicly traded companies work.
    .
If they have PCGS as authenticators that is the first I have heard of it and that is good because we all now know, thanks to you, that they are going to do a great job with this. But I don't think that a contract for this with PCGS is cheap, so ultimately, it is the fees they charge sellers that must pay for it. And to be responsible to their shareholders, they will likely raise fees to cover those costs. Time will tell, but if I bet on the prediction markets I would be betting that ebay will be raising final value fees on coins sooner than later for this.

390 coins is more than one coin.
Seems including an extra coin to circumvent the new ebay authentication service does not circumvent the authentication step.

Who keeps items determined to be counterfeit ?

If one 40% half is bad or clad or one coin short is entire lot confiscated ?

    Update to my earlier post:

the 2 1/2 indian (raw) was recieved this am, in about an hour 1/2 later, verified and shipped to buyer, also shipping fedex, so at this early stage , they appear to be on top of things. Thats good. Ill let you know when the 3 other coins that were shipped fedex arrive and process, they were already graded by pcgs.

My coin was also in and out in a day… but already in a pcgs slab, so no huge surprise there.
I’m more interested to see how TwoSides’s sale of a big bag of 40% turns out actually, as I have a lot of odds and ends scheduled to start up in the next week or two.
Mostly exonumia and other raw stuff that will stay below the $500 threshold, but definitely a few that likely will not…

Update on the 390 half dollars , which were listed in the category of coins/kennedy half dollars.

Authenticator says item was mis-categorized , and unfortunately doesn’t qualify for authenticity guarantee. But still…. Am sure some might share similar frustrations as I do , in doing your best to be a good vendor, already.

free catches a lot of fish but a minnow like me doesn't bite on it. Always read the fine print. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

Just a small update on the coin I purchased. Won and paid for on Aug 30. Mailed on Aug 31. Old way was Texas to NC. 3 to 4 days.
The new way. Texas to Cal. (PCGS) Mailed Aug 31. Arrived Sept 4. My coin is still at PCGS and hopefully it gets to FedEx today. I’m assuming it will take at least 5 days from Cal. To NC. So most likely I’ll get the coin on Sept 14.
So from 3 to 4 days to almost 3 weeks.
PCGS should look into opening a satellite office on the east cost to speed things up. I know I’ll be reevaluating any larger purchase I make from eBay from now on.

Only single coins that are over $500. Raw or certified, it doesn’t matter. The exception is multiple coins in a single lot. There is no option to opt out.

First raw coin was authenticated and delivered, came in super fancy Ebay packaging. Purchase to delivery was 8 days.

Second raw coin was just delivered to PCGS today. 13 days since purchase and yet to be authenticated. I'm guessing it'll be nearly three weeks for this coin to show up.

Hey there @jmlanzaf , see, I am not the only one who gets it. Good that ebay is finally doing something about all of the fraud, but now they will be also seeing buyers flee. What you can buy on ebay, can be found on other websites for quicker turn arounds for the most part. Even at my site, a week to mail a check, 3 days to send the coin Priority Mail. And me, with only 12 views a week as you noted.............. (Not). So this can only hurt ebay in the long run, and the sellers, and the buyers, but I get it, it has to be done. Catch 22 all around.

Although I believe the intention was good on eBay’s part, I feel in the long run it will hurt them more than help. On the other side there might be fewer scams above the $500 mark but probably more under that number.

    You can both be wrong.

So your position is that you would rather they deliver fake coins fast than authentic coins more slowly?

Brilliant!! Maybe you can turn that into a radio spot for ebay: "The coins may not be real, but you'll get them FAST!!"

Brilliant! Love it! Give me more!

As I clearly noted, Catch 22. Fraud on ebay, they finally do something about it, and the good people get screwed.......... I say, buy somewhere else, silly me.

Well I question this : Who is going to authenticate the 390 coins I shipped ? And if I missed a .900 , will I be penalized ?

Another question is, who is going to pay for the inspection? ebay? Er no, buyer, er, no, seller, well, probably. FV fees are a goin' up.....................

And yet, again, card fees have not gone up in the 5 years since they started it.

And since you hate ebay and don't use them, why do you even care?

I love ebay. I love this new program. I look forward to future improvements.
