Anybody here old enough to remember how back in the 1970’s and 1980’s and 1990’s and 2000’s and 2010’s and 2020’s people very much like us kept saying “Dollar Coins Will Circulate When They Stop Issuing Dollar Bills!”
“Be careful what you ask for. You might just get it!”

No one is asking for anything. Just stating facts.

People are attached to paper, and the only way to wean them will be to eliminate paper. That said, so many payments are electronic nowadays that it is far more likely that paper will be replaced by cards and smartphones than by coins.

Plus, he’s gonna get two more, like Grover Cleveland on the presidential series, too. Congress could end the presidential dollar series , this year. We could make it part of the “save” act :joy:
No politics intended. Attempt at comedy.

Yes. They produce those coins for sale to collectors. To my knowledge, they are not distributed to banks, because there is no demand for them. People who want them buy them from the Mint. They don't go to banks looking for them. Dollar coins simply do not circulate in the US.

There will be some demand for these, due to their unique nature

    Agreed on no demand but....
"Some demand due to unique nature." What is the unique nature? Just curious.

You are trying to get me banned, but I will take the bait. The unique nature is a sitting, living president being featured prominently on the obverse of US coinage.

Think what you want about the merits. It is unique and collectible.

The legislation currently in Congress to approve a Carter Presidential Dollar and First Spouse Gold Coin also includes language to approve similar Presidential Dollar coins and First Spouse Gold coins going forward so that you don't need new legislation in future years when the time comes for coins for Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden, Trump and so on...

Seems like that legislation would take politics out for the most part :+1:

Product limits are 50,000 of the bags and 150,000 of the rolls, with a HHL limit of 2 of each.

I calculate that as 8,750,000 coins in total. The original announcement also seemed to suggest that they would also be released into circulation, so if that occurs then the mintage will be higher.

??? What other dollar coins are released into circulation in 2026? And where are they used?

It would be a colossal waste of money to flood the zone with tens or hundreds of millions of these, that will sit, unused and unloved, in vaults all over the country. Especially after killing a cent that was actually widely used, due to the cost.

I am pretty sure that "seemed to suggest" means the coins have a regular, circulating finish, and were made in the millions, the same as regular, circulating coins.

The fact that the website says the following is the clearest possible indication that they will not be released into circulation:

"The coins—minted at the Philadelphia Mint—have circulating finishes but have never been placed into circulation. However, they may be still used as legal tender." No need to say that if the coins will actually also be circulating.

Pretty sure they will have a hard time selling these at $1.55-2.44 each if they will be obtainable at a bank for $1.00, and that the only way to actually get them will be to buy them from the Mint at the premiums they are asking. The product limits suggest that want to make them readily available to those who want them. And also that, like the 2026 cent, the only place to get them will be to buy them direct from the Mint.

Sorry, but 8.75 million is a TON of something that will not actually be used in daily commerce. It strains credibility to think they are actually going to be making more than that for actual circulation. Can you think of anything that they ever made in such a quantity for numismatic sales that also circulated? Ever? Even in the glory days of uncirculated sets?

There will be far too many of them for them to ever be rare or valuable, but they will be a nice keepsake for those who want something affordable as a souvenir of this unique time in our history. People who balk at paying 3x spot for a silver coin with a mintage of 250K should similarly have a hard time paying what these are going to cost, given the mintage and lack of any intrinsic value. OTOH, they make $50 2026 cents look like a screaming deal.

The original press release about this dollar coin stated that they would be available from the mint in rolls and bags and that some would also be released into circulation. (Unfortunately these threads end up getting deleted when people don't behave, so the original source and discussion are no longer available.) I have no idea if that is still the plan but you can take it up with the mint if you disagree.

The mint doesn't need to make dollar coins for circulation just as they probably didn't need as many quarters as have been produced at various times over the past few decades. But, if they think there would be a particular purpose (special demand, commemorative design, etc.) then they can do it anyway. If there is a specific demand by customers then the banks/Fed can decide to order what is in demand.

As for cost, there is no comparison to the situation with the cent. The cent had negative seigniorage, while a dollar coin is positive. Every one that is made represents a profit for the government.

Otherwise, you are misremembering. Because, this is it. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong again, and then don't apologize when I turn out to be right. The only place to get these will be from the Mint numismatic program. They are literally telling you that in their description.

I am not "misremembering" anything. I copied and pasted the text from the Mint's website into the now-deleted thread.

It would not surprise me if they changed their mind on trying to circulate them, or if they were also available through the bulk program as Illini420 suggested. Note that there are only product limits posted and not any mintages.

Either way, I'll have nothing to apologize to you for. I'm simply stating the facts as they were presented by the Mint. You, on the other hand, make definitive pronouncements that frequently turn out to be wrong. I'm still waiting for your apology after you repeatedly "promised" us that the Mint table at the FUN show would be closed on the National Day of Mourning for Jimmy Carter. Of course it was open but you were nowhere to be found following that fail. 😆

Yup. You are right about FUN. I apologize. Your turn on gold Liberty Bells.

I never said anything about gold Liberty Bells. What was that about misremembering?

Sorry. You are correct again. I am confusing you with another one of my fans.

But get ready to apologize now. There are not going to be any more beyond the 8.75 million they are offering on the website. And many of them will be available for years to come. At least until 2029.

Do you ever do research before making pronouncements? This is right on the current website.

Nope. I totally missed that. Let's see if it actually happens, although, I have to admit that it looks like it will.

So I guess there goes all the money they are going to be saving over the next 10 years by not making cents, as they flood the zone with these. And I guess I'll also be back to asking why anyone would buy 8.75 million at a premium, when countless more will be available at face value? To get a MS65 instead of a MS63, when there are tens of millions, and none of them are going to actually circulate?

Same reason people bought any of the mint rolls. Even if you (we?) aren't interested doesn't mean that others won't be. They'll grade them, add them to their SemiQ albums, etc.

You could ask "why?" about every Mint offering.

    Yeah. I guess.

It's just that we've never seen them offering this much of anything at a premium like this, have we? Which is why I am truly shocked that they are also going to be available elsewhere at face value.

The Administration apparently really just wants to get these out there, regardless of the cost. Because everyone knows there is no organic demand for dollar coins to use in commerce. I shouldn't be surprised, but I am, given the big deal they made about killing the cents to save money.

The liberty half dollars sold out with 100,000 2 roll sets and 50,000 bags. That's 14 million coins.

Again, seigniorage alone guarantees a profit since there is a 50+ cent per coin profit. That is booked as soon as they are monetized.

I did not realize that either. Are they actually available at banks?

And, sure, seigniorage guarantees a "profit." But it's just a book entry profit, while you are actually spending millions of real dollars to produce and distribute something that is just going to sit in a vault unused.

It's no different than the money they lost making cents. If the coins aren't actually either used, or bought and saved, they are lighting money on fire.

Due the unique nature of these coins, a certain amount will be bought and saved. But many, many, many more will sit in vaults indefinitely until they are ultimately destroyed. No different than any other dollar coin they did this with in my lifetime since casino slots went to tokens, and then cashless.

A waste of money that will dwarf what they are saving with the cents. Production costs. Shipping costs. Storage costs. And then, destruction costs.

Without getting political, regardless of what image is on the coins, making and distributing dollar coins for circulation in 2026 is lighting money on fire. Which is why they didn't do it with any of the other dollar coins they produced this year.

I will leave it to everyone's imagination to speculate why this coin is different. And, as I said before, I am surprised that it is. Other than, apparently, there are times that it is very important to be fiscally responsible, and other times when there are things more important than taxpayer money.

Because, if seigniorage was truly as profitable as you imply, we could mint our way out of federal deficits by producing unlimited numbers of base metal coins, in ever increasing denominations, and then just storing them in massive vaults in the middle of nowhere. Producing coins for circulation that are neither going to be used nor hoarded is not profitable seigniorage. It is lighting money on fire.

The history of every circulating dollar coin, ever, with exceptions of Western state use when dollars contained a dollar's worth of silver, and casino use back in the day, and trade dollars is that the coins won't be used, no matter whose face is on them.

Not until they stop printing the Dollar Bill.

The Big Boys ordered some on the 20th.

They ordered 150,000 rolls, and 50,000 bags, poof.

It sounds like they'll be mixed in. Let the madness begin.

Are you sure they ordered that many? Those are the same numbers for the product limits on the mint's webpage for next week.

That doesn’t even include any bulk sales of the big bags on pallets.

We were assured by a certain member here that the originally expected mintage (based on the product limits) of 8,750,000 would never sell out and would still be available through 2027.

It seems that 8,000,000+ have already been sold?

No, I'm not sure. I didn't/don't usually track ats for the AB's the day before their allotments go live. Maybe someone will show up with that?

I went to the AB pages and referenced their "Product Limits" posted below the ats area.

This was my assumption based on other AB product pages that show their respective product limits.

Maybe the Mint, in this case is showing the same PL for both the AB's and Retail?
