Carrington sounds like a real critical thinker, but it's also true that I wouldn't have heard her name except here.

Apparently there is new WNBA drama and it's all around that hottie Sophie Cunningham getting muckled, the funniest part of it is the assailants social media comments after getting ejected

It's as stupid as it is comical 😂😂😂

Cunningham has been getting mugged the clothes line from the back like that would have been a fist fight if you did that at the local park or one of your inmates did that. Shes been targeted for being legitimate really good friends with Clark and she spoke out against men in womens sports recently. Shes also a social media star so some jealousy too.

As far as Reese, most of her rebound are off her own misses, he shoots like 40 percent and the overwhelming majority of her shots are from within 5 feet, she cant dribble, she leads the league in having her shots blocked by so much the next two combined would still be behind her but other than that shes pretty good

I'm not a basketball player but I can promise you if someone clotheslined me like that I'm throwing punches as well, they should clean that stuff up before someone gets really hurt

I still have never watched any WNBA game action outside of these assault videos, these girls are rough lol

A buddy who follows WNBA said that about Reese as well lol

I might start watching just for looks, this Carrington chick is pretty hot for a brute

Ive seen fights at the local court playing pickup for a lot less then that.

No one hates successful women more than other women lol but yea Reese is really not good. She was like at best the 4th best player on her LSU teams and got famous for going after Clark which makes people think she was the best player on the team. Even Clark used to say basically I dont care about her were focused on other players type things.

Clark and Cunningham was the majority of the views with two likeable fun loving girls that are actually good and dont shoot air balls or miss most of their layups. The all star game was pathetic with air balls and missed wide open layups.

With what just happened theres no debate that it was intentional period. Everyone knows it unless theyre against who it happened to. The announcers even instantly said this should get upgraded What can be debated is how much of this is for Cunningham defending Clark, politics, speaking up defending womens sports, and how much of it is to get attention on her when Reese built a career off of being the girl that hates Clark. No clue what the percentages would be but its definitely some mixture of all of it

I read about Carrington a bit and I have a mixed opinion.

    1. She seems like she has been an overly aggressive and wild player. So there's some substance to the playing aggressive and stuff happens.
    2. I think everyone is aware of the situation and sides are being picked. So going in hard... you said you played sports so you know what that's all about.
    3. Putting your hat in the ring. The fame skating... sure. You could maybe compare it to Bill Lambeer who was actually a pretty elite player even if his vertical was 3-4 inches. He was also quite intelligent and was one of the guys who showed that bigs could shoot from the perimeter. He sure embraced the bad boy enforcer image though and monetized that with endorsements. Point is... I think people are treating the women differently in some regard and as a parent who has daughters I find that to be poor form.
    4. But that Carrington is apparently a pretty good player overall.
    5. She has a couple arts degrees from Stanford and a masters from baylor I think. kind of token degrees but still you know she's not stupid. Reese doesn't seem to be stupid either. I think the WNBA is loving this... for now.

aside from that, let me know when a real man is playing in the WNBA and then you know... let's go protect our girls... I have 2 and I have zero fear about men in women's sports. if anyone thinks that's a real issue then let me know please so I know when to roll my eyes.

@perkdog, it is debatable to me. Even though it appears she raked her across her head she was going for the ball and simple missed is by an inch or so. A flagrant foul call was, I suppose justified, I don't believe she was trying to rake Cunninghim across the face. Things in all sports happen so fast in real time and require such precise body control and movement that when violence is intended it is crystal clear.

    JMHO, of course.

C'mon - if that happened to Shedeur Sanders you would give yourself a hernia jumping up from the couch and screaming at the television! :D

Of course Reese and Beuckers were making the bet all in good fun. Like so many things in the W, it just illustrates that they've never had to deal with this kind of scrutiny before. However, when you get into bed with gambling interests, there is zero tolerance for the appearance of impropriety. Even a friendly bet introduces an individual goal in the context of a team goal. It is expressly forbidden in the CBA for a reason. 🤷‍♂️

How common it is is beside the point. For the individuals involved when it happens, the issue is as real as if it was happening everywhere every day. Laws and policies are supposed to protect everyone, not just those in common situations.

Laws and Policies are designed to simplify governance first and foremost. We draw lines to reduce error at the expense of precision. As such, sometimes these Laws and Policies can be a bulldozer where a shovel will do.

I can agree that it's a problem worth solving, but I would not have this as a priority and the impact seems to be very much overstated. If you had to convince someone that this is a fight for now what would that argument be?

As someone who views forcing women and girls to compete against biological males as an injustice, I would frame the issue the same way I would an injustice against other minority groups. As you say, only a small minority of women and girls are affected by this issue. A gay or trans teen in a small rural town has a right to expect equal justice despite their minority status. So do the women and girls affected by this issue.

I mean... I think you've articulated the issue quite well there. I think where you may see my stance as different is simply in the pragmatism of the application to resolve both of those perspectives appropriately.

What exactly is a biological male??

I see commercials that use the phrase “assigned male at birth” and wonder, what exactly does that mean??

I remember when there were men and women. Now there are women who used to be men, men who used to be women, some type of women/man you have both hybrid and who knows what else.

I’ll stick with men and women, how can that confuse anyone??

That's fine with me. I said "biological male” because I didn't want to confuse the issue for someone who views trans “men” as men.

As I understand it biology determines sex based on a few diagnostic criteria which are related to chromosomes, hormones, and the parts. In nature there are cases which do not fall into distinct male vs. female categories. man/woman are not diagnostic terms as much as they are descriptive. Science is the foundation for understanding things better vs. worse. I'm still not convinced any of this is a problem that deserves the amount of attention it is receiving.

And yet another term. What is a "trans-man" and exactly how do you arrive at that state of being?? There are words to describe all these "sexual anomalies" that we all know and say in our heads because we can't post them here. The World has gotten a little too PC and Accomodating very fast, and it has to stop eventually. The point can be argued, and remember, I'm pretty Liberal, but what has taken place in the past 10-20 years is nowhere in the same zip code as NORMAL. A man taking hormones to alter his body is still a man, a woman taking hormones to alter her body is still a woman. Doing the medical procedures don't alter that, either. It all just changes the outward appearance and perhaps some bodily function, but it doesn't change the "sex" that a person is.

trans would be short for transgender - which means that your gender identify differs from the one assigned at birth.
man is a noun which defines a gender identity.

while the terms, man and woman, are descriptive, what they represent is diagnostic. if you meet these criteria you're this, and if you meet these you're that, and everything else in between is dealer's choice or you figure it out. if it looks like a duck..., but that doesn't mean I can put on a wig and call myself a stork either because that's a lie. when it comes down to who I want my kids in the restroom with I am always making an individual decision.

for sports I think someone just needs to figure out if something can be done to effect fairness in organized public leagues - the others can do as they choose - or this new group would need to lobby for rights the same as everyone else - I guess this is what's going on. I'm sure when the women were lobbying for the vote it was the end times too. 20 years ago no one would have said that aloud! where are my pearls? I saw a weirdo!

That’s how it’s been for thousands of years. Greeks and Romans and science since forever. But you’re right that almost always people fall distinctly into one of two categories. The science of this is not debatable. It’s objective. No matter how many times anyone can argue it. It’s all besides the point. Harness your fragility.

It doesn't need to be overcomplicated but social changes have made it that way

As far as I'm concerned there is a serious lack of men nowadays regardless of their organs

I had this 24 year old "Guy" helping me doing some heavy lifting at work cleaning out a warehouse and after a short time he told me he was tired and had to switch out with someone else, I'm 30.years older than him and laughed, I know it bothered him but he still switched out with another kid.

    Funny stuff

i don't think i've ever watched a single second of a live WNBA game, unless you count the second or so it takes for me to blaze past that channel. if there was nothing but positive chatter emanating from that league, i might feel a slight gravitational pull to see what's up. but with everything taking place on and off the court, all it does is reinforce the notion that doing absolutely anything else is a better use of my time. as a general rule, i can't handle watching women play basketball because it looks like a group of individuals trying to extricate themselves from quicksand compared to the men. so the moment you include complete and utter nonsense to the equation, i'm forever out.

bottom line: the WNBA is doing its very best to alienate every single potential fan that they so desperately need

I don't know what any of the 'hard to define gender' issues in society have to do with the WNBA. Unless I am mistaken there are no transgender or intersex players who play in the WNBA. Just because a couple nobodies from the NBA want to try to get some clout by saying they are ladies and should be able to play doesn't make it true. There is no actual dilemma in the WNBA currently and there is no rule anyone can find that says men can play in the WNBA. It's hard to not lose track of the fact that this is a giant nothing-burger.

    But there is though

These guys went over the WNBA rules and stated they identify as a woman and want to be eligible to play next year, it's a non issue at the moment because next season hasn't started yet but if they don't clarify the rules then these guys might actually be allowed to suit up

Will it happen? IDK probably not but it has spearheaded some debate regarding the pro trans attitude of that league, even if your not into the league it's still a pretty interesting subject matter

Here's what it says. "Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA."

But guess what. They didn't define what a woman is! we got them and it should be easy for these guys to slip through the lack of definition. We could probably even get Horses into the league. I mean the door is wide open.

Oh no, another "end of debate" guy. :)

Everyone has there own idea of what the NBA players lobbying that they identify as women and wanting to enter the WNBA is all about. I see it as an effort to force the WNBA to clarify their "language" about who can play and to sort of force all the players/league officials to step away from all the "trans" talk and move back towards reality.

I can't wait for NCAA/NFL football to start, we are all bored and this BS is nothing more than a distraction.

I'm just going by the YouTube video I watched, there were a few of them saying the same thing but in all honestly I lost interest after that video so zero chance I'm looking up the rules but if it says "Woman only" then I would assume that does not include pre op Trans Woman or man or whichever is the right way to say it so if that's the case this SHOULD be a non issue and these guys are just blabbering

I didn't realize it was that cut and dry about the rules, I guess if it said "Anyone who identifies as a woman can play" then it would be a real story, "Woman only" then that's pretty much a non starter for these guys the way I see it

Section 1(a) is a single sentence: "Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA." The document provides no definition of "women," no reference to gender identity, no hormone thresholds, no requirements around medical transition, and no separate transgender policy. The CBA ratified this past spring kept that same one line, and the league has not clarified rules for transgender, nonbinary, or intersex athletes. Reporting has noted the 409-page agreement never defines the term.

The NBA, on the other hand, has no gender clause AT ALL. It routinely uses male pronouns when referring to players seeking eligibility, but it makes no statement about Men only or what a man is. I think that's enough of a declaration to show that the argument being made by those players is ridiculous. This is a plot for daytime TV. Two nobodies from the NBA make a show of absurdity to promote a social view that is intended to push the WNBA to write a biological definition of a term into their CBA to solve a problem that the WNBA doesn't have so that people will follow suit of a league which they all declare as irrelevant. If that's not a snake eating it's own tail...

In that case it shouldn't be too hard for Cathy Engelberg to tell everyone “hey it's obvious what a woman is, a man saying they identify as a woman isn't it!” Of course, she won't do that, which is kind of the whole problem.

She doesn't have to do anything. I assume the league would prefer if all of the nonsense surrounding this issue would stop, and that would certainly be an easy way to make that happen. Of course the problem is, it would start a whole new round of nonsense from within the league.

The WNBA is so weird. Dallas Wings are playing the Indiana Fever tonight. This is the promo poster from ION, which is televising the game. The two players shown from the Fever are averaging a combined total of 9 points a game. Raven Johnson hasn't even been in the rotation recently. Certainly no reason to show Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell or Aliyah Boston, who are typically responsible for about 65% of the team's scoring. You can't make it up!

    bgrbgr Posts: 4,665 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don't know about ION or this particular case, but I was told that there are some issues with using Clark's image because of her existing NIL deal. Follow the money is usually the answer.

So while the names, Ion and WNBA are the same, the issue is with who makes the poster and what their licensing rights are. Maybe that's BS and they're trying to drum up drama by leaving Clark off it. Did you figure out what statement you think they should be making?
