Neat Story: NGC Fatty No Grade to OGH 65 to CAC Approved

I recently bought some old holdered coins from a local estate auction. I went 3 for 3 at CAC with a gold sticker.

This particular coin was in a PCGS 2.2 OGH holder but came with a little flip that I didn’t notice until later on. The coin was originally sent to NGC and was sent back NG PVC. Then when sent to PCGS it straight graded at 65. I couldn’t wait to send it to CAC to see what would happen. It stickered!

I can’t say that the coin wasn’t dipped between NGC and PCGS, but the coin does have original skin/toning, which would lead me to think it was sent as it was.

A very interesting case that I wanted to share.

Interesting story. However, since NGC “Fatty” is a specific type of holder, because the coin wasn’t holdered by NGC, there couldn’t have been an NGC Fatty no-grade.😉

Good call Mark! It would be even more interesting if JA played a part in the original NGC grading of that coin.

So, does this coin have PVC or not?

The coin has an NGC 4.0 insert. These would be the first NGC slabs with a hologram on the reverse and were introduced in December, 1988 or January, 1989 and used through around 1992.

And maybe even more fun here on this board if we could tie it to Mark's time there! >:)

So if I assume that nothing was done with the coin there are two conclusions:
No PVC, NGC got it wrong and PCGS and CAC got it right.
PVC so NGC got it right and PCGS and CAC got it wrong.

I believe the PVC was removed and the coin was then sent to PCGS where it graded.

Another possibility is that that PCGS coin and NGC flip aren’t for the same coin.

    Don’t you just love a mystery?? 😮

Yes it certainly seems to be a mystery.
