Ive always been a fan of the 1926 s dimes, they are an extremely tough issue. This example is an au53 found raw on ebay.

Toughest coin for me to find when
I put my Merc set together. Sadly, sold the set some years back.
Would like to find one. Was looking at a slabbed 1926-S 10c G04 or 06. Higher grades fairly expensive. I can see how somebody could sink say $5k in a bunch of higher grades.
1926-s is special for me too. Mine was pulled directly from circulation, c1950s, by my Grandma. She gave it to me (with dozens of other mostly common date Mercs) about 55 years ago. It grades G.
I recall sorting through a bunch of 1940s dates and then finding the 26 and flipping it over to find the "s"! And it resides in my Dansco!

I am still seeking one in the AU-55/58 grade range.
There is a certain person who hoards this issue and I believe over time, his efforts have perceptibly depressed the available supply.

Relative to more famous “rarities” like 16 d and 21 p/d the 26 s has a comparatively low pop but far lower market value so I respect the endeavor
That's a really tough issue, for sure. Especially in EF/AU grades like that.

I suspect both you and the seller knew it was a 26-s, but you had the foresight to see it in a straight holder?

Correct, paid in the neighborhood of $150 was listed as xf details. Seller used overhead scanner images (favorite for cherrypicking) which required some imagination.

Hilariously most of my needles do not come from hours of daily scrolling but pure coincidence during a blue moon session.

No doubt about it. A fun high profit project. Especially if deep pocket.
Many hoarding them paying whatever then markup double bubble cost x 2 or more. Makes their case at shows look good but buyers gonna have to pay the money or adios. In a real bull mkt cash flows in the streets.
Was looking at maybe get some the other night but they looked picked over (lots details stuff). Like the nice ones pounced on (savvy retailers, investors).
Here is first a raw VF album toned then a raw coin I graded XF plus. Once had a slabbed AU-58 with strong if not full bands, though no photos of it. All were sold years apart more than 10 years ago.
