No clue how this graded 50, it seems well circulated to me.
Love the look, love the issue, but not sure I love the grade. Looks like a 40/45 in the images.

My thought process to get to 50 was starting at 45 + bump for original surfaces + bump for better date mm

It's not the sharpest strike seen on a 1912-D but not the weakest either.
I would have guessed XF-45. If enough frost is available then AU could make sense.
Here is a PCGS XF-45 with some similar weakness when magnified.

Here is a raw AU 1901 (the dealer it sold to agreed) that I could have photographed to look like the one in OP. It was difficult enough to get it to show any hint of frost due to the tone (particularly the reverse), no matter how I angled the lighting.
Bottom line for the 1912-D in OP, I cannot tell if there is any frost under the color from the photos. Doesn't look like any. Would have to see it in person to arrive at a final opinion as to grade. Might only consider it to be only XF-40. Have seen similar looking ones that did have enough frost in person but the photo showed none.
Definitely prefer the OP coin to this "beauty" of a PCGS AU-50 12-D further below (which still doesn't mean I would call either an AU).
