Best of the Mint (4) 1804 Silver Dollar Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set

mbr33mbr33 Posts: 883 ✭✭✭✭

There’s a little over a month left before the first of the two 1 ounce gold coins and silver medal companions drops. As of now, there is no posted ATS or mintage limit. Will the Mint go with 30,000 throughout the program?
Judging by the social media reaction to the series so far, this one seems to be desired more than any of the others. Good luck to all of us who want one!

Oh I can be the first response!

I think these sell out if they are 30,000.

Do you plan to get one? I think you may be right on the 30,000. I thought the silver medals would be getting much more discussion and interest, but haven’t really seen much pent-up desire for them.

I don't care for the silver medals but might attempt to get both the 1804 and 1907.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the medals. I know that some hate them, but they do look better in hand than on the website (which is generally always the case anyway) I'm 100% certain that the gold coins will look phenomenal once I get them in my hot little hands.
I've always been a fan of the High Relief gold coins, so the 1907 is especially appealing to me.

This one is on my ‘want’ list. I’m seeing presales on eBay for $14,000 for a PCGS SP70 set and the seller is ‘pre selling’ 2 sets. Another is just for the gold coin at $9999 for an NGC SP70. 🤔

Can we subscribe to these and skip the waiting room or do we have to compete against bots wait 20 min and find out they were sold out in 30 seconds?

It’s a bot party again. The little guys will be sidelined quickly….as seems to be the norm now. 😏

You are just trying to avoid the Best of the Mint, you see that is where the name comes from, the coins are only a secondary consideration to the amazing experience that the Mint offers. ;)

Oh, and no -- no subs for things where they can make us dance like puppets and then cut our strings in 30 seconds or so.

I appreciate the feedback Old Collector and Safari_dude. The silvers have been a useless addition to the set and less than desirable.
I was hoping to skip the bots, but I don't think that's going to happen even with its huge price (for me). Even if I don't get one, this is IMO the most eye catching of them all. I will enjoy knowing one of ya'll will get it. Maybe see one in a coin show!

Guaranteed. The timing of the release is no coincidence. When is the last time you saw so many different things coming out all at once, back to back to back?

Again, I know everyone is all hot and bothered over this, but 30K is a lot for anything that will be selling at that price point. The only recent comparisons are to things with far lower mintages at far lower prices, like the FH gold dollar 2 years ago.

These might or might not sell out, but I just don't see them being the slam dunk many seem convinced they will be. Of course, all bets are off if the mintage turns out to be a lot lower. They still have not published a number on their website.

Raw 2024s are now going for $5-6K, with a mintage of 10K. That's around what these will be going for, with a silver medal, direct from the mint. If you had to pick one for the same money, which would you choose? If the mintage is 30K, it's hard to see them going for what eBay pre-sales suggest ($8700 in PCGS 70).

As a result, I think they will be popular, and might even sell out. But, with a HHL of 1, they should be available for at least 24 hours.

Unless, of course, buyers club bots pull the same thing they did with the gold Liberty Bells, and box legitimate buyers out, only to later slam the Mint with returns when a flip doesn't develop, because dealers will be getting advance access to them, and because, like the gold bells, they won't be a great bargain at their issue price with their mintage.

Unbelievable, given that this is the one people have been waiting for! They didn't sell 30K of anything to date, and THIS is the one they decide to cut back on. Unbelievable. People building sets of the medals are going to be screwed, and on the one where they probably could have actually sold all 30K.

I could be wrong, but I think the BOT attacks were specifically for the silver Liberty Bell and were as bad as they were due to the profit margin being made on the secondary market. I’m not 100% sold that we will see that here. At least I hope not, as I want a set.

Yes, that is quite likely accurate. But it's a catch-22, isn't it? If the coin is worth the steep premium, it needs a secondary market and that attracts the bots. If it's destined to be a loser, fewer bots so you can pay the premium. Lol. So you are always able to buy the losers.🤣

And keep in mind, the higher price makes attractive even with a lower flip number. If it's $250 over issue price, you'll see the same traffic as you did for the silver bells because when you throw in the CC incentives, it's still $400+ for 10 minutes work.

You bet! It’s a Catch-22. I’m basically an irrational odd-ball when it comes to certain gold coins. The premium doesn’t deter me, as I’m not looking to ever sell or even track my non-existent profits that I’ll never realize on some of these. I know that flippers will be out In force for this one, as it seems to be the most desired of the bunch.

    Sellout in 5-10 minutes???🤔

In 2014 they brought 500 Gold Kennedy “halves” to the show. People lined up at 5:00 a.m. on the first day. It was a bit of a madhouse. Dealers bused in people to line

Nope. If anything, the lower mintage will only attract the bots, because, as @jmlanzaf said, lower mintage = higher secondary market prices.

You will. This is half the mintage many were expecting. Including many here. People with no interest in the others have been waiting for this.

And now they decide to cut the mintage. It's going to be a bloodbath. After what they allocate to ABPP and bring to the show, the ATS will be around 10K. If the bots strike, and they will, most here will get nothing.

And THAT is the one reason why maybe they won't bring them to the show, in addition to what happened with the Liberty Bells. Because they certainly timed the release to coincide with the show, but that was before bots took over the website and they decided to cut the mintage to half of the first 3 sets in the series.

Both the Mint and the ANA LOVE the hype, but I don't think anyone is going to want a repeat of what happened in Rosemont. Maybe this time around they will figure out a civil way to distribute them, if they choose to bring them. But I'm not sure that will be possible, with that many dealers and that much free money for the taking.

Maybe ANA members only, with ID, and no dealers? But not sure that would go over too well with the crowd in the room, although it would screen out the homeless.

Nah. They won't dare go higher than 25% for ABPP. I actually don't even think it will be that high.

OTOH, could be more for the coin show and the gift shops. Either way, we are speculating about rounding errors. Maybe 9500. Maybe 11K. We will be fighting with the bots over around 10K, unless the Mint fixes that in the next 3 weeks.

i'LL go with the "under" on them fixing it. Although in this "Mint to demand" year, 15,000 surprises me to the low side. I can see going under 30,000.....maybe....but 20.000 to 25,000 would certain move a lot of gold.

How about the USM leave in place the current ABPP guidelines, allow a small allotment for the WFoM and the stores, and then priority to a presale for accounts that have before a current cut off date, purchased BOM1, BOM2, and BOM3? That would eliminate the bots and buyer's clubs that weren't in from the start, would provide for those who are trying to get the series to have a chance, and maybe leave some for the on sale date.

Oh, and I would be able to complete a set without fighting dreaded bots 😆

How about the USM leave in place the current ABPP guidelines, allow a small allotment for the WFoM and the stores, and then priority to a presale for accounts that have before a current cut off date, purchased BOM1, BOM2, and BOM3? That would eliminate the bots and buyer's clubs that weren't in from the start, would provide for those who are trying to get the series to have a chance, and maybe leave some for the on sale date.

Oh, and I would be able to complete a set without fighting dreaded bots 😆

Sounds great, but they are simply not set up to do this now. Lots of suggestions for how to handle limited mintage, high demand releases, and bots. None of them are going to be implemented with no notice in 3 weeks.

If they cared about people being able to complete the series, they wouldn't be reducing mintages midstream, and right at the point where demand is likely to significantly increase. For whatever reason, they are doing this on purpose. Maybe someone will ask Hollis at the show what the thinking is behind this.
