Vaultbox Slabs: Good, Bad or Indifferent?

124Spider124Spider Posts: 1,243 ✭✭✭✭✭
edited July 31, 2026 3:53PM in U.S. Coin Forum

Hi,

As I search for the coins on my shopping list, I stumble across coins in a Vaultbox slab from time to time.

Gambling has no attraction for me, so I have never dabbled in that game; but I have no problem with it existing.

I find that I am absolutely turned off to the idea of buying an otherwise acceptable coin if it's in a Vaultbox holder.

I'm wondering if others share this aversion.

Thanks.

Mark

I don't search them out if that means anything.

I would immediately reholder any coin I bought in a VB slab but there are some perfectly fine coins in those holders.

No, I haven't even thought of it outside of seeing it here. No interest in it either

Just to clarify, I'm talking about coins that were graded by PCGS with a special label showing it was a Vaultbox coin, that is now trading on the secondary market. I assume that the grade is as reliable as a regular PCGS slab, but I am turned off by the Vaultbox label; I'm wondering if others share that aversion.

I don't buy coins in VB Slabs or coins in several other slabs.

I think of it like any other PCGS slab.

Meh. I'm just not OCD enough to care if my slabs are all identical. I don't even care that much about the Trader Bea slabs, other than i would pay less for anything I'm reselling because people do seem to care. Although I've also met people who like them.

If I liked the coin, I would pay the same amount for it as I would any other modern PCGS or NGC slab.

    Label? Don't care.

Buy the coin and not the label on the holder.

I don’t particularly care for the label but if it was a nice coin that I wanted I’d most definitely buy it.

    2nd mouse gets the cheese.

SOMEBODY overpaid to get that slab, lost their shirt on the resale, and now the market has them fairly valued.

That may be true of a vast majority of moderns in slabs. The number of under $20 coins in slabs is staggering. When added to the number of bullion coins that sell for melt (or less), only the TPG and the 2nd mouse are getting any cheese.

Yes both the VB and Trader Bea slabs are a turnoff for me. Both are so garish and take your attention off the coin, I would not avoid buying one if it had the right coin but would need to include the reholdering costs into the deal.

VB slabs are "garish"? They are black and/or red.

I actually bought a coin in a VaultBox slab last week (in part) BECAUSE it was in a VaultBox slab.

It was a Barber proof listed online, and the seller photos were no better than basic slab scans, so there was a lot of uncertainty about the purchase and I was leaning towards passing on the coin.

But, when I looked the coin up on the VaultBox website, it included the buy-back offer for the coin. The offer was exactly the same price as what the seller was asking for the coin.

Since this essentially de-risked the purchase, I pulled the trigger. I haven’t gotten it in hand yet, but if I dislike it, I’ll take the VB offer and be made whole.

If I do like it, it’ll be sent to CAC stickering and then CACG for reholder.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

Well, it it's a matter of taste but basic red and black doesn't strike me as "garish".

The 10 point grading system predates the VB slabs and continues to exist. Google NGCX

Edited to add: they also continue to dominate the Ancients market with dual 5 point grading systems.

    https://www.ngccoin.com/specialty-services/ancient-coins/grading.aspx

And, of course, they sometimes use the stupid 70 point scale.

Google NGCX? Yes, I know what it is. Launched with great fanfare, shortly before VB. I think VB was the first big user.

Where is it today, and why did VB diversify away from it? It was supposed to be the next Big Thing, chasing after the same market as VB.

The fact that NGC has not yet pulled the website means nothing. I haven't seen or heard from this since shortly after launch, since, as I said, it landed like a thud. It's not the next Big Thing. it's a garish feature of a red NGCX VB slab.

Do your own research. They launched NGCX largely for moderns not classics, although they sometimes use it for classics. It is not tied to VB, although VB used it. It was for bulk submitters.

It is used at the request of submitters not forced upon them. Check the census, there are tens of thousands of NGCX coins.

Tens of thousands? Since launch? You don't say. How many hundreds of thousands of moderns do NGC, PCGS and ANACS combined slab each month?

Census is one thing. How many went to VB? How many have been added to the census in the last 6 months? Tens of thousands is nothing. Especially if there is no longer any interest. Is there?

The painting is generally more important than the frame, but on occasion the frame can be so terrible that it detracts from the art. Still, in the end, it’s all about the painting.

    Same thing.

Same with every single Mint release this year. I see them all over the place. Without going out of my way to look for them. Haven't seen a single one in a NGCX slab.

There's no doubt the Sheldon scale is still more popular.

Not sure what any of this has to do with VB, anyway.

I know. But where are they? I don't see them on TV, which is almost exclusively modern, and high volume at that. I don't see them online.

Is there?

I know there was a launch. I know there was a lot of hype. And now I don't see or hear about them anywhere, other than right here, right now.

There are currently over 1600 NGCX coins on ebay.

Are you looking for them? Or you expect them to just find you?

Neither. Just saying I don't see them or hear about them.

I don't go looking for Dan Carr overstrikes on eBay, but can't avoid them, either here or on TV. On multiple channels. Several times per week.

Same with every single Mint release this year. I see them all over the place. Without going out of my way to look for them. Haven't seen a single one in a NGCX slab.

For comparison, how many NGC coins on eBay? You seem very good at finding exceptions to every rule.

There's no doubt the Sheldon scale is still more popular.

Not sure what any of this has to do with VB, anyway.

Nothing. I should have kept my mouth shut, but felt the need to chime in by pointing out that something "garish" about the slabs you posted, aside from the color, might be the NCGX scale that is not market standard.

When looking for coins, my first thought is indifferent, but I could do without the 'eye-catching' slab, and the hype associated with it. I realize it's part of attracting new and younger collectors, however I would like to see a downturn in the 'gamification' of numismatics.
