1776 is the year the 13 colonies declared independence. 8 reals from that date are hard to come by due to their demand. Not only was it minted on independence year, it is also pre 1857 legal tender.

Just got this one. Looks like an older PCGS holder as it has the barcode on the back. How were the grading standards back then? Lacks, stringent or about what it is today?

And these last 2 bring the total so far of my classic commems in MS65-MS67 to an even 50 examples. It’s been a fun journey so far. With these, who knows when or even if it will end.

I’ve always been attracted to those slabs. I can’t go as far as “stringent” grading, but I think they met standards. As I collect IHC’s, though, some of the RD’s given in those days would be RB today. Mellowing in the holder maybe? As that grading period was some 25 years ago, that’s a possibility. JMO.
