Flash Dip Silver Round Toner

Had this one sitting in the to do for a while.

Silver round with basically thick mostly ugly obverse toning and the reverse with something resembling album toning. The obverse looks to be thick and consistent so probably won't do anything but can try to dip it off. The reverse with the album like toning has a varying thickness of toning (thicker near the rims, color). So should be able to dip off the center toning and leave the toning near the rim.

Note: Before and after reverse - I kind of like the original more but this was just a silver round with blah toning on the obverse so I thought a good piece to demonstrate. Or so I hoped.

Next after a flash dip. It worked and the reverse went white in the center leaving some toning at the rim. Notice most of the thicker blue is gone and replaced with the rusty color that was more towards the center.
The obverse is still blah, as expected but a little thinner looking.

At this point will dip the obverse a second time to try to get something out of it. But as seen the toning is just dipping off and becoming blotchy. So a third obverse dip and it is mostly white. I stopped here but a fourth dip would make it more white but it appears the toning may have been a little to thick and might leave a little haze or not(?).

I’d be curious to know what “flash dip” means and what your solution is. I’m assuming it’s E-Z-Est, but at what concentration?? Also, how long are you leaving the coin in the solution and what are you rinsing it with??

I liked the original look. Obviously some people have mastered the technique to get the centers and high points bright and leaving the nicer tones. You see examples on the market quite often. Coin encompassing toning that somehow avoided the high points and central areas over all those years.....

I've done similar experiments as you with EZest and the results were always disappointing compared to what I thought the result would be (based on examples I'd seen for sale). There isn't a way to predict which colors or areas will be removed when the whole coin is dipped. The experts must manually manipulate key areas and likely have the concentration and technique down to a science.

Sometimes the best application of EZ Zest is when removing unfortunately placed LIGHT tarnish, using either a tiny artist’s brush, or a Q-tip.

That said, the OP did a pretty good job cleaning up that silver round.

I have never been a big fan of dipping and have done only when the toning is fugly. My bottle of EZest is 20+ years old and have used on silver jewelry as much as coins.
My consideration for 'can' the coin be dipped with success, I rely on the Sunnywood color progression chart. If the colors are 3rd and 4th cycle, I don't try as I do not believe the toning will be removed with a quick dip, and will leave toning shadows on the coin. If a long dip or multiple dips are needed to do the trick, think more harm is done trying. I'd consider the OP's round as 4th cycle toning.

Not sure which is worse, the evident shadows of dipping on an otherwise MS coin or stripping part of the luster off the coin.

Thanks all. What is the thanks for, recognizing that this was not about making the silver round look better or making a buck off of it. But rather that there are some out there (I am Not one of them) that can somewhat control 'dipping'. This by their 'special' methods and by recognizing the toning 'pattern' and what might become of it.

I was attempting to crudely show this by noting the obverse and reverse differences and then giving it a shot (as Bon Jovi says). Knowing this, then it might help when viewing other coins. I know one person (I suspect there are others) who can remove toning, light toning to some degree, without using an acidic dip. No I don't know how and these people don't give away that info.
