    Possibly a planchet defect.
If so, that would technically make it a "mint error", but not the kind of error that adds any value (probably detracts some from the value, actually).

Since there is no corresponding bulge or damage on the other side opposite the dent, I am sure that the coin was struck this way, as opposed to post mint damage. Might have been a fragment of something that was rolled into the strip that the planchet was punched out of, or it could possibly have been something that got in between the planchet and the die in the press. Either way it fell out after the strike.

Bottom line, a genuine Mint Error, but not a particularly valuable one.

Could be some circulation damage. Did somebody try to drive a nail or whatever into it?

Or some kind of corrosion, biological attack. Tough to tell.

Every time Cougar says biological attack I envision an army of microbes waging war against the coin.

My take is environmental damage and not as struck ... but ... it is very difficult to tell from that image.
