Gold Double Eagle Overstrike Dickeson Continental Dollar sells for $11,800.00
Nice to see So-Dollars Dollars selling strong, above $10k.
Does anyone know who struck this?
Both Q. David Bowers and Robert Bashlow (with August Conrad Frank Company) issued restrikes around this time, however, H&K doesn't list either as issuing gold overstrikes. I've seen some references that gold restrikes were done by Bowers.
H&K says the following:
In 1962, 7,200 White Metal restrikes were issued by the current owners of the dies, Empire Coin Company, owned by Q. David Bowers. The medals were minted by John Pinches & Sons, Ltd., of England. Empire Coin die varieties can be attributed by a small die gouge above the O of Continental in the denticles and a diagonal scratch below the C in Continental. Empire Coin Company then sold the dies to Robert Bashlow, who produced 2,000 Silver, 3,000 Goldine and 5,000 Bronze restrikes, together with "a few trial pieces in various metals." He later announced that "dies have already been donated to the Smithsonian Institution..." Thickness of these White Metal restrikes is approximately 2 1/2 mm. as compared with 3 mm. thickness of Dickeson piece, No. 854. Silver restrikes by Bashlow have small S on reverse and are approximately 2 3/4 mm. in thickness (no S on No. 852); Goldine and Bronze restrikes are approximately 2 1/2 mm. thick.

Dan Carr’s grandfather?
Let me see if I can find my file on this.
.
My Grandfather was too busy being a diplomat of sorts and working for the CIA.
Jeff Shevlin had the Dickeson/Bashlow hubs. I hubbed a pair of dies and struck some in 2022.
Five were struck on Liberty Head gold Double Eagles.
Four were struck on 50-gram 999 gold blanks.
.
Which generation hubs are these?
.
All I know is this from Jeff Shevlin's web site:

.
So this is a 2022 Dan Carr and not a (1961)?

Here is the earlier thread on the overstruck 1887-S $20.

I assume the original dies from 1776 are long gone. Does this mean that the subject coin is a restrike of a replica?

Replica.
To my way of thinking the original Dickeson medals would be a replica of the 1776 issue and the ones subsequent to that would be restrikes of the Dickeson issue. To take things into the 21st Century, the newer ones may be a copy restrike of a replica so it's getting a little ridiculous at this point. To that end, there seems to be enough of a market to absorb the small number being made.

The pieces that I struck were on commission by Jeff Shevlin.
They have a sandblast texture and appear to be less shiny than the piece that sold via Heritage.
I would need to examine a couple of my strikes (in hand) to be sure.
Moonlight Mint Goodness
3 of 5 I own, sadly passed on $20 overstrikes when they were available.
PEACE & COPPER & MORGAN
My other two are Centered Clad IKE & Off Centered overstrike 1976 IKE
Other than $20 gold overstrikes they are availble for purchase with a little history included:

I would say that the circa 1860 Dickeson strikes are Novodel issues.
Then Elder did Novodel Mules with the Obverse die only.
Then Empire Coin Company did Restrikes of the Novodel issue.
Then Bashlow did Hubbed Re-Novodels, a term I just made up and may regret later after I have had more coffee.
Then Shevlin did Second Hubbed Re-Novodels and Second Hubbed Re-Novodel Mules, ditto.
Then all Hell broke loose.
