Summer FUN Roll Call (show report added - day 1, day 2 & a quick finale)

Who’s going? It’s next week in Orlando 7/7 - 7/10. I never attended this show until last year as I happened to be in Orlando at the time. What an eye opener! I had read this show was attracting an ever increasing following: TRUTH!

Frequent attendees to this show say it gets better each year! Should be a good one this time around too - dealer tables have been long sold out. MCO is easy from SFO; direct flight. Easy Uber to my hotel & an easy (but hot) walk to the OCCC.

While I attend two full days for Winter FUN, for Summer FUN I take the Palm Beach Coin Club subsidized motorcoach ($20 round trip). As such, I’ll be there, but only on Friday, arriving around 10:15 am.

For this show, I’ll be wearing my new shirt. If you see me, introduce yourself and say, “Hi”.

Agree that last year was one of the busiest Summer FUN shows I’ve attended over the past ~23 years.
Yes it will be hot, but so is most of the rest of the country this time of year.

Flying across the country when it’s 77 in So. Ca and 94 in Orlando with 90% humidity right now is a no go for me. I’ll wait until January.

This will be my first summer FUN show. From what I've heard, this show has gotten bigger and more popular over time.

I just noticed board member @BillJones will be presenting a talk on “building a type set of $20 gold pieces” on Friday the 10th @ 1 PM. Bill always has valuable information to share in his presentations - I’ll be sure to make this one!

Thinking of venturing up there. Unfortunately, my cheap Spirit ticket that was only $52 round trip from Ft. Lauderdale is no longer available….so may have to try SWA. The worst part is it leaves approximately 6:30 AM for the 30 minute flight up to Orlando and there’s no return flight till 9:30 pm…..so it would be an all day affair. Then again, saving money on shipping coins to the three grading services and seeing many friends/dealers and amazing coins/displays makes it all worthwhile….sooooooo will most likely end up there for the day. 🤔😉Cheers, karl

Day 2 - Friday. I’ll start with some pics:

The line for the US Mint was just as long today as yesterday - there was a new product release.

A couple shots of the bourse. Today wasn’t quite as busy as yesterday.

Bill Jones made a nice presentation of “building a type set of $20 gold” which included some interesting history.

Who are these guys? Eric & “winesteven” with his 250 shirt!

As for me, I bought a couple toner IHC’s & did a CAC submission. Throwing in a timely sale that turned out to be 15% over my target was a bonus. And finally, I completed a GC consignment to wrap up a great day!

My take on the show yesterday……. Great crowd of people and most dealers looked busy. A few tables I went by and was interested in seeing a few coins but the dealer/rep was too busy chatting with co-workers or looking at coins and just ignored my ‘interest.’ PCGS had a long line of customers waiting to submit coins…wanted all the forms pre-filled and definitely needed more reps. Standing in line for over an hour wasn’t my idea of fun……and of course the forms are a bit of a headache to fill out correctly so a lot of corrections on tiers and shipping for many of the customers, myself included …… NGC had a steady stream of customers but little to no wait time. CAC…..no line the entire day that I observed. Went twice to submit coins and just sat right down and was attended to. The reps filled out all the paperwork and were as pleasant as could be. ICG had a grader there willing to look at your coins and give his opinion on any that you had questions about. He didn’t care if the coins were slabbed by other TPG’ers. No line for them or ANACS either. Lots of dealers, lots of coins and lots of sales and trades going on. My only suggestion would be for each grading service to have one of their professional graders on hand to give advice/opinions on possible conservation, reholders, and crossovers, etc. . Hate throwing away money and sending in coins that have no chance ….and would rather use that money to buy new additions instead. I think the TPG’ers should throw us a bone every now and then as I know many here spend a lot of hard earned $$$ at these services so getting a few seconds of free ‘professional advice’ would be great. The bourse was quieter today, but it seemed like there were locals catching it @ the end. Lotsa packing up by dealers as they continued to work their tables. The departures were evident. Final pic is compliments of a resourceful young man (maybe 8 or 9) going around with a roll of the new dimes & selling them for $1 each. I had to admire his initiative so I bought two - still haven’t seen any of the new ones in the wild!

I was there on Friday for a few hours. I had a very enjoyable chat with @Davidk7 at Peak Rarities. He even managed to interest my non-numismatic friend I went with in some coins. Amazing. I was looking for commemoratives, Mercury dimes, and patterns. Not necessarily to buy but to look at and then consider buying. David suggested for commemoratives Sabel Rarities had a table so I stopped there and had a another truly enjoyable chat. I have looked at their web page many times; probably now I'll do more than look. But that was about the only table that stocked a large number of commemoratives. Very few otherwise. Ditto for patterns and Mercury dimes. I was surprised to see a semi-large number of Roosevelt dimes. And a huge amount of currency and, of course, Morgan and Peace dollars.
