I haven’t looked it up but how does the rookies with just one Bird or Magic compare to the main one with both AND Dr J?

In terms of actual population, there's half as many of the true "solo" rookies of Bird and Magic... the trio card was a double print. But they also have a lot of Leader and All Star panels/cards that aren't considered RCs.

Nice quad of the Bird/Erving/Johnson. How did they grade?

No spectacular grades of these 4

amazing break. That little black print line on the lower right is the same on mine. it definitely cost me a few grades. So annoying.

So you did not receive one PSA 9 or 10?

I'd hazard a guess that the Bird/Erving/Magic RCs could receive no better than a 7 due to off centering, but also the position of the perforations between the panels. I believe they deduct for that as well.

The black line usually costs you one grade (I had one that graded a 9). Ironically, it's not a defect... it's theoretically present on half the Bird/Magic rookies out there because it affected one of the cards that were double printed on the sheet. However, if that particular card is off-centered low somewhere above 55/45... the black mark isn't present because it was cut off in the cutting process.

Mo Cheeks. Loved that era 6ers team.

Ol' Jellybean Bryant sharing a card with Cap, unaware his kid would be a future Lakers legend.

I know the set is iconic (maybe too gimmicky) for so many reasons but I always thought it contained some of the worst photos of any set ever. Most seem out of focus or the colors are way oversaturated.

Between this and the photo quality of the 81 Donruss the early 80s did not start off well.

Just imagine what they could have done if they would have issued this set as "tallboys" with the same design. They could have used photos that zoomed out a touch, they would have been huge, and the set would have been legendary.

Was Kareem on every 3rd card in this set?

Because of the cert sequencing, I assume these were graded by the same person. If that’s the case, I don’t understand how they can look at the middle card and say it’s an 8 (oc) but then review the top card and say it’s a 6. Maybe my eye isn’t very discerning, but they both look to have the same centering.

    Beautiful cards by the way!

You can't tell just from looking at a 2 dimensional image of one side of the cards. If you had both cards in hand (and a magnifier) the reason could become more apparent.

Why would anyone care about a card from the 80s that a '6'. You should give it to me!

That's one of the nicest 6's I've ever seen.

For sure. I just find it interesting that the 8 warranted an OC qualifier and the 6 did not. Without taking out the micrometer they look the same to me.

  • lahmejoonlahmejoon Posts: 1,987 ✭✭✭✭

Just to the naked eye, it looks like the OC one is slighly more skewed toward the top border than the 6. That said, that's totally nitpicking - they are so close.

Chris, the kid you got your Currys through does Bird signings all the time. Have you thought about cracking to get those done? Then you only need to worry about Dr J.

I think its because the 6 is a 6. It looks to have surface specks the 8oc doesn't have. Nothing to do with the centering.
While the 8oc is an 8 with centering issues.

Beautiful cards as always. Just out of curiosity, why did you stop after just getting Magic to sign? Those would look great signed by all 3.

Magic was a PSA event where the cards were Autographed by Magic and then graded/holdered. I will need to crack and go for Bird next.

    Isn't an 8OC the same as a 6?

Often you can catch both bird and Dr. J at NSCC but I don’t think they’re on the list yet. Powers has them both from time to time. Now that I think of it doesn’t PSA have them both available right now? They just sent something about signings.
