My first trade dollar - how does it look?

dunkleosteus430dunkleosteus430 Posts: 530 ✭✭✭✭✭

I went to a local show today (the Houston Summer Coin Show). Lots of cool stuff there, but not much of what I was looking for. I saw this, though, and decided to buy it as I didn't have one yet. I thought it looked pretty nice, and I didn't see any glaring problems in the artificial lights.

I grade it at F-12 and a half, details at least. Do you guys think it might have been cleaned or polished? I don't see any hairlines from any angle, but I'm still learning. Thanks for any input and let me know if you need better pictures.

It has been cleaned. Do you consider that a glaring problem?

Not bad as a $200 or so coin with the problems.

Congrats! That’s a beautiful coin even if it was cleaned!

Nope, I'm not too concerned about it. Just wondering.

I’m also wondering if it’s a tad darker/more gray in hand. There seems to be some glare from the light and cellophane that might be making the old cleaning appear a little worse than it is.
I’d let it get a little air, in a drawer or somewhere safe, and let it continue to darken up.

Well, I don't think she's necessarily original, but she's not a bad looking coin. Doesn't appear to have been completely and utterly molested, and I agree with @Walkerguy21D assessment that she's probably even a little more pleasing in hand, and could benefit from some time breathing outside of any holders.

It does look a little darker in hand. It's not an original-looking color per se but it makes me think that the cleaning wasn't recent or heavy.
Edited to add, thanks for the storage advice. I'll try it out!

The supposed cleaning seems pretty light.
I like that the coin has nice rims and no major impacts.

I’ve seen more egregiously scrubbed examples in straight graded holders. This one looks “market acceptable” to me.

My first thought was polished, but I think the shots through the mylar may contribute to the smoothed look.

It seems like so many trade dollars have been cleaned. I know when I was shopping for one I kept coming across them.
I like the one you purchased. It doesn't look harshly cleaned and it has lots of details for the grade.

Genuine F-15, it might straight grade, but not worth the additional money in my opinion.

Nice amount of detail left on that one. I think it’s a nice addition to a 7070 album!

Looks like a nice Trade Dollar for your collection. Moderate wear, no major hits or dings. Enjoy!
