if the 64 is in the same shape as the above, you've got silver

keep in mind the 64 is 90% and the 1976 is 40%

  • Yes actually I did, but I get no where because there is a whole lot of false information out! And to be honest I was seriously debating on coming in here, and ask, because the mayor part of Coin Collectors in here are jerks! They seem to have forgotten that they weren't born with that knowledge for coins! And that they too knew nothing at some point in their life's!

One of the resources on the web is the Resources: Books-Links to read on numismatic series, errors, and varieties thread that is pinned to the top of this chat room. The very first post in that thread gives an accurate answer to your question.

If you want accurate information, read that thread and the links in it.

On the upper top right is a link to coininflation which tells current silver value. You should be able to get 80% these from reputable coin store.

The current silver value right now shows toward bottom of page

Do you think that is the right attitude for someone asking for our help?

And what are you saying about the mayor?

He's new. He doesn't know we have a King and not a mayor.

If you think members of the forum are jerks, you should see some of the newbies who drop by.

Even old collectors learn something new here.

I did not know that the US minted 40% silver clad bicentennial half dollars until now.

Although these are just melt coins, I strongly suggest that you spend a few dollars to get a 2027 Red Book that comes out around July 7 to allow you to answer a lot of your questions and give you a basis to understand your coins.

I recall a long, long time ago when someone new would show up and it was much different. Both the arriving newcomer and members greeting them have changed, and not for the better.

Does the 1964 have Accented hair? If so it might be worth a little more than melt. eBay can help you find current realized prices for a lot of things. Just search their listings and add the “Sold” filter to see what actually sold.

That is not a useful comment to give to a new poster. If the OP doesn't know enough to identify a proof coin, they certainly don't know enough to identify accented hair on a proof coin.

@coinbuf, I think it started to head South when new members were unhappy with the replies they got, the forum piled on and the free for all started. I still remember my first post some 25 years ago: there was a thread where members were arguing about a PCGS graded coin and I opined that I thought the graders were a bit better informed and more experienced to render an opinion on a coin’s grade.

Went over like the proverbial lead balloon. 😇

As I think back to when I joined the forum in 2002 I think newbies are (generally) initially treated better today than back then, the hazing was quick and severe back then more often than not. Today most of the time newbies get a chance or two to learn, although certainly today there are a few that like to quickly test the depth of a newbies skin right away.

Oh, come on. Who told you that?

The 64 half dollars wholesales at 85% melt all the way up to Gem unless there's something otherwise special about it.

The '76 wholesales at about a 10% premium to melt as long as it's original (not degraded in any way). These retail at strong prices right now but this is very hard to capture even if you're a dealer. Really nice versions can have substantial premiums but that means the finest 1 or 2% and instinct tells me that doesn't include the pictured coin.

We're all sweethearts here and we all try to encourage newbies.

Just remember a lot of coins even including old coins that are worth less than a few hundred dollars often have to be sold at wholesale. You don't know the coin market until you have sold a few coins. Selling keeps you abreast of change.

Most of the people who stick around were knowledgeable when they got here.

I don't think that's true. There are a number of people here who came in with low knowledge bases. The ones that stick around tend to be the ones interested in the coins, not the prices. The ones that flash and go tend to be the ones asking about value or whether they have a rare "error".
