The gold sticker experience

At the last Central states show, I consigned a lot of 20 coins to Great Collections to auction off. I always check the box that says let GC decide which ones to send to CAC. They did select a handful, and all but one got stickered. But one did get the coveted gold sticker. It was a 1952 Washington Carver commemorative 50c dated 1952, nicely toned and in an old green PCGS holder with a grade of MS-64. I bought this coin long ago in an old Teletrade auction for around $60.

Fast forward to last night and I got this nice result. I know gold stickers do add premiums but was not expecting this result. Has anyone else here had a similar experience?

Just for comparison, here's a non-CAC PCGS MS-66+ coin that sold last night. It's attractive too, and was imagining if my coin got this grade without the sticker, would it get the same result, assuming my coin was 2+ points undergraded? We'll never know.

I was watching this coin and you had the trifecta going for you in terms of older PCGS holder with stunningly toned coin and a gold CAC sticker. The coin you compared it to has a higher grade but is significantly less nice than the coin you sold, in my opinion.

A gold sticker in an old green holder is money in the bank. The actual Value of the coin means very little, at that point..

I'm shocked that went so high.

This is atypical for that coin. I've had plenty of old holder and gold stickers and have researched reasonable pricing or expectations. Keep in mind customers who pay that kind of money can return for refunds and GC will still have the positive press regardless.

    OGH + Gold Bean = $$$

As others have said, OGH + Gold CAC is generally a winning combination.

I’ll just add that OGH + Gold CAC + Great Collections seems to be becoming a nuclear combination.

The coin sold for the high price because of the toning not the sticker. A 64 vs a 66 (id f you assume two grade points for the gold bean) is like $45 vs $125. I doubt folks are that silly to pay a thousand bucks for a sticker LOL. For toning apparently yes

Hope you didn't pay dearly for them. Gold CACs were never cheap.

I only started collecting commems in 2024 but even then, the gold CAC's were relatively affordable. More recently, the prices have gone through the roof so I'm mostly on the sidelines (although I did pick up four more yesterday).

Do you think that a nicely toned coin increases the chance for a gold sticker at CAC?

Yes, particularly depending on the series.

Related, no one would describe your new Buffalo as "nicely toned". It's a nice enough coin but the tiny hint of color is a complete non-factor.

Commems and Morgan's are two series where exceptional toning outstrips almost everything, including the assigned grade and stickers. I think a white GWC commem in an OGH gold sticker at the same grade brings a fraction of this price. On the other hand, this same coin in the OP with a green sticker on a newer generation holder might well have brought a similar price.

People that witnessed the craze of the Sunnywood Morgans should understand my point.

Yes, and by quite a bit. Toning is often the “wow” factor that pushes an undergraded coin from a green to a gold sticker.

Do you or anyone have any thoughts or conclusions on the best way to receive the highest value for otherwise fairly common coins with gold beans? Ebay No reserve auction? GC? My expectations may be too high but I have a 1932-D Washington Quarter in a new PCGS holder that I think PCGS graded too low at MS61. I'm hopeful for a gold bean.

You could try a cac submission or post here. NGC usually doesn't give lower grades than the coin warrants.

I’d say a no reserve auction at GC or Heritage will yield excellent results on any coin with a gold CAC right now. As far as your 32-D Washington, my experience with submissions and monitoring of the current market is that is very rare to find a gold sticker on a new holder. When you do, they are generally previously stickered coins that have been reholdered and restickered.

Gold Sticker Rattlers have gone through the roof. Last Sunday there were some Gold CAC Mercs in PCGS 2.1 holders and Rattlers and the prices were extremely high. Each auction I think I might finally have a chance to add a coin and bam, someone comes in and drives them to new highs.

How about coins in CAC holders? Will a coin in a CAC holder sell for a higher price than one in a standard PCGS or NGC holder?

It depends on the coin and the eye appeal. The bloom is off the rose, cacg coins were bringing higher prices.

Yes CAG coins sell higher and they have their own pricing structure in CDN CPG. Research so can get all the money.
