PCGS barcode and NFC check is not working on some coins with PCGS Gold Shield
Recently, I found out that both barcode and NFC check are not working using the PCGS app on many PCGS graded coins, and I got couple return requests because of that. I checked 40 to 50 coins that are on my desk that from different auction houses, all of them barcode check is not working and 12 NFC check is not working. I have already sent 12 of the coins back to PCGS for re-holder recently because of NFC problem. Today I got another return request from a buyer on another coin because of the NFC issue. From now on I will check NFC to make sure it works when I receive them from PCGS grading or auction house. I think you guys should do the same. In case someone don't know what is NFC; here is the link from PCGS on Groundbreaking NFC Technology. If you can see the green message when you check that means NFC is working otherwise it is not working. https://www.pcgs.com/news/groundbreaking-nfc-technology-included-in-all-holders

I want to make sure people understand not all the PCGS Gold Shield has NFC feature. PCGS Gold Shield was unveiled as a replacement for PCGS Secure and began implementation in January 2018. NFC came out on October 2020. But barcode should work as it is a mature technology.
I have a considerable amount of skepticism over some return requests due to barcodes. nfc? maybe
I had a problem with my 2023 sovereign back in 2023, I sent it back to be fixed and by the time it got back to PCGS, the system was recognizing it…
Sometimes it’s just a system issue that will fix itself, eventually
I still ended up getting the coin reholdered…

Thanks, I believe this is good information for everyone.
@jt88,
Hope you do not mind a question, but I am curious.
Let's assume the 12 'coins/holders' you sent to PCGS for reholder due to the NFC issue are authentic. IOW, the 'coins/holders' were legit, and the failure to verify was a PCGS 'problem/mistake'.
Do you pay for the reholders, or does PCGS cover the costs?
good question.
nowadays part of the QA check needs to include the nfc working
I don't know yet but I am sure and hope PCGS will do the right thing, but anyway I need the TV so if I end up have to pay for the holder that's fine with me because I want the TV. I will report back when I get my coins back.
When you use PCGS App to check your coin using NFC, the first photo showed NFC worked with green message; the second photo showed it is not working.
I have quite a few recently graded coins where the NFC does not function. Not
to mention some that had NO TV even taken of the coin. In addition, many of my newer slab coins (around 25% of them) that spiderweb crack for no reason and need to be reholdered already….😐

It is very important that the coin and holder be in good condition because many of the buyers are well-educated collectors, and they don't want to buy a coin then ending up to send them back for re-holder. They would rather the seller take care of this before they buy.
Status update. PCGS just emailed me that 13 of the coins I sent for re-holder or re-grade are counterfeit (12 failed with NFC check, one passed NFC check, one with TV, 12 without TV but has photo). All the coins seem to match with the photo on PCGS site. My friend said it might be 3D print so the photo matched. Well, if they are 3D print then weight should be off. I weighed some of the coins before I sent them to PCGS. it is between 53 to 57 grams with holder. Anyway, for any high risk, high price coin if you have any doubt, don't wait, send them back to PCGS to verify.
you bought them, then tried to re-sell them, and that's where the issues with buyers started?
no, the one i send to PCGS was not for sale, at least not yet. I bought them recently. The one I sold and returned I have not sent back to PCGS yet. I am pretty sure those are authentic.
I am pretty happy that I did not take a chance and wait any longer to send them to PCGS for verification. I think I might have a pretty good chance to get my money back. A few more days will be 60 days deadline for the credit card claim. Well, I just found out that it is much harder to file a credit card claim now. I might still have to fight for it.
open the cases asap. don't wait for the coins to return
well, it is hard to file a credit card claim now online because one of the question is "did you return the item". I answered no then I can't file. I did call my card and filed one but I have to file 13 of them. Another question is "did you contact the seller and when? So I need to wait couple days to call the credit card because the total amount is not small and I need to give the seller couple days to respond. I still have few more days.
if it is down to days to go and it might take days to get replies from the sellers then file the disputes now. you can close them if you and the seller work things out. it is simple to tell the CC company you bought authenticity certified items but the certification company said they were counterfeits with counterfeit certifications. that will get things moving
was the one with the TV real?
No, the one with TV and the one that passed NFC are counterfeit according to PCGS
OK. I will wait for 3 days to give the seller some time to respond but I am sure he will not respond.
I'm saying don't wait 3 days if the time crunch is there.
What were the coins that turned out to be counterfeit? Morgan dollars? Did you buy them from the same seller? I'd like to see some pics if it all possible.

China silver dollar (number one high risk coin). Yes from the same seller. I have photos but not sure if it is ok to post in a public message board.
Sure it is okay to post, they are selling Fakes!

Does anyone how to report the seller to FBI or some other agency?
find the fbi office near the seller and simply call them and ask to file a report. they may direct you to a web form. you can do tht but talk to a human, too
How did you pay? If by credit card, call your credit card company.

was the seller international?
Credit card. I just opened 10 cases with my credit card. ebay refused to help after 30 days. I still have 4 cases on ebay but I don't have the coins to return because PCGS has the coins. It might take time for PCGS to return it, if they will return them.
well, I am not sure if PCGS like me to post photo.
pcgs won't care. we post photos of counterfeit coins in counterfeit holders all the time
here is one

Call them and ask. They should return the coins. You'd think they would want to destroy the holders.

our team should have contacted you by now, did you not get a call?

for the photo you guys posted are looks fake but all my coins are matched with PCGS photo and one with TV and one passed NFC check. It is very hard to tell they are fake. Also if you do NFC check all of them pup up PCGS site and point to the right coin but no green message except 4 (PCGS just told me 3 more fake that passed NFC check). all those coins might be graded by PCGS couple years ago in PCGS China office. Anyway that's my guess only.
no, at least no message left. Well, I did get email from PCGS telling me some of the coins are counterfeit
I had a coin in which the NFC chip didn’t work, but the bar code did. I was told that the NFC chip needs to be “activated”. > @jt88 said:
When I scan the NFC chip in the label, I get the green message.
When I scan the barcode, I get the blue message.
I filed the FBI IC3 complaint.
was this a seller in the usa?
yes.
you might also call the local police department where the seller is and file a report
get evidence from pcgs re:authenticity in an email or something spelling ou the issues with each counterfeit one by one. i'd be satisfied with counterfeit coin in counterfeit pcgs holder. the counterfeit coins in a real holder won't help you unless the person is the original submmitter
Where was the seller located?

Looks like I might be getting some of my coins back soon. It is in QA now, and PCGS has removed all the fake coin photos from their site. By the way, PCGS did not charge me for the fake coin grading fee, but only charged return shipping and insurance. My friend asked me what PCGS guarantee means. I said I don’t know; if I can get my money back from the seller, then I will move on, since I have already filed an FBI internet fraud complaint. I am not sure about filing a police report as MsMorrisine suggested because it might be too much trouble to do unless someone can help me on that.
you call their local cops and they will take all the info over the phone, then you just send the evidence to the officer. easy
Anyway to file online? My local police station can do that.
