I’ve got the 2026 silver proof set headed my way. I looked past the high price point for the doubled dated coins in this set. I’m most looking forward to seeing the Half Dollar and Dime in person. The quarters have a nice reverse but I’m not crazy about the obverse designs.

Yes, because it is substantially being hoarded.
Just look at all the bank boxes of all the denominations being sold on EBay -- EBay has a substantial number of some of the issues that will not see circulation for a very long time if at all.
The checkers know nothing about any new coin designs. Want a confused look, ask them if they have heard anything about new coin designs.
The 1976 issue comparison about how much more we used change back then is valid, but also consider the desensitized theory. How many variations have been issued since the 1976. So not only do we not use change that much anymore, we've been worn down with maybe a hundred reverse designs?

Oh. In that case, never mind! Although, in my experience, you can order boxes from banks, but have no control over whether they are fresh or stale.
And, 99 times out of 100, they are not fresh. Do that enough times, and you can no longer order boxes from banks.

I MIND paying a premium for them. These are supposed to be “the people’s celebration coins.” The current mint director is supposed to in the collector’s corner. All I’ve seen since they had “the big penny auction” is that he is in his own corner. With “collector friends” like him, we don’t need adversaries. In a different way, this is as bad as it was in 1965 when mint officials regarded collectors as “the enemy.”
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
As far as I know, the mint has nothing to do with how or when the coins show up in change.
The banks play a larger role, intentionally or not. Here is another thread on the Forum posted by someone who wants mixed rolls of dimes but his bank only has new rolls:
I haven't gotten any 2026 or even 2025 coins im change yet. I guess that's because i virtually never get any coins in change. I mostly use credit cards.
