The Greatest Generation.

May is actually Military appreciation month. I recently read something that there are about 45,000 American WW2 vets alive out of 16.5 million that served. On this last day of honoring those that serve and served post a coin dated 1941-1945, I'll start, a humble coin, but a coin that was minted because of the war.

I have no coins from that era to brag about, my only 20th century coin is a ‘16 Walker.

Forgive me but I’ll gladly brag on my parents though, Dad saw combat in the Pacific and was wounded three times, twice on the same day, all while my Mom was a WAV triaging inbound wounded at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Dad wore a 12 pound metal brace to support his right leg for 65 years, never complained once.
I miss them every day, may they rest in peace.
Greatest generation indeed.

My grandfather, a coin collector from pocket change, received this 1942/1 dime during his coffee break in the 1950s.

He'd been looking for one for years, but he selflessly offered it back to the lady at the cashier. He told her that it was valuable, and she should keep it for herself. Just a classy guy. Fortunately, she returned it to him, and it has been a part of family lore for the last 70 years. He is 30 years gone, but I'll never forget his kindness, wisdom, and courage. That dime brings a smile to my face every time I put a loupe over the date, as I experience the joy it brought him so long ago.

Superb gems for a superb generation: My uncle served and was a decorated hero. He died 20 years ago from cancer.

Dad enlisted in early 1943, and was supposed to go to North Africa, but was reassigned and served in the Philippines and later in and around Japan. Attained the rank of sergeant (NCO) at the ripe old age of 21. Lost Dad 47 years ago, but have his scrapbook and souvenirs from his time in the Army. Thank you for keeping us safe!
Here's a nice WWII Victory Medal for those that participated that I picked up from @Maywood!
This one has some nice color!

Caroline's father went thru d day as well as many others as well
I would like thank all who served, past and present and most certainly, future. Great people all who gave their country their time and their lives to allow all Americans the luxury of this Great Country's benefits. My Dad was a B-24 Bomber pilot during WWll and served in North Africa and Italy during the war. Most of my family served throughout their lives, uncles, cousins, brothers, father and I thank them also.

My Dad, 82nd Airborne and 88th Infantry.
Captured in Italy, held in Yugoslavia. Beaten often and had back problems his whole life
This was after he was released.
My mom was a Female pilot for B24 bombers. They would get them from the factories and fly them to the coasts to head across the pond.
A great generation indeed, heroes each and every one. And a time (unlike today) when Americans knew and understood the true meaning of patriotism and national pride. From a day that will live in infamy to D-Day.

These bricks make a nice remembrance. Outside of the WWII Museum in NOLA. My dad served in the Pacific as the engineering officer on a destroyer - he’s in the middle. Looking at all the bricks is a moving experience after touring the museum.
Here is a watch from a dead Japanese soldier. My Grandfather took it from him after taking his life. The picture of his wife or girlfriend remains behind it.

5 cents, struck in tombac (brass) since nickel was needed for the war effort. The morse code denticles read “We Win When We Work Willingly”. This coin type is what got me into collecting.

Very cool nickel. Can someone who reads morse code tell us what is written around the rim?

My dad was born in 1916 and was 25 when Pearl Harbor was attacked. I think after the attack they were drafting younger people so he was able to continue his job as a high school teacher. I think that occupation may also have kept him out of the draft. Ultimately, he was drafted in early 1945 as by then, they were scraping the bottom of the barrel for draftees and taking older men. He was allowed to finish out the school year. He went in the Army in June, 1945. By that time, Hitler was defeated. He was discharged in early 1946. My uncle also served in the US Army, North Africa, as an airplane mechanic.
My dad served in the Pacific War. He put this together over 60 years ago.
He did good 👍
Thanks @johnny9434. I hope somehow somewhere he is loving this. Nobody in our family back then cared about his hobby, including me. I was just a self centered teenager. Now I have a chance to preserve his work of love and legacy. I have lots of work to do (and lots to learn), but I am full of purpose. That's one thing I have really missed since I retired. It feels real good.
