Thoughts on identical-slab coin sets?

I find sets with identical holders (eg: my ANACS yellow-label only WQ set) to be neat but I want to know what some of you think.
I know this can be considered “prioritizing the holder and not the coin” but I feel some criteria makes things fun!

Here’s my example so far!

Edit: I do have mixed TPG sets but my WQs I find fun to do ANACS yellow label only

    If you like it then go for it, but just don't expect it to be liquid (and this can be for any niche area).

    I have a preference for matching slabs but that's usually not realistic. But I do need them all in the same TPG's holder.

    Whatever floats your boat. I care a great deal about what's inside the holder, and a whole lot less about the holder. Yes, It's "prettier" if all the holders match, but that'll never happen for me, and I don't care.

    I display my type coins in trays, so I sometimes match common coins in the same grade and slab for aesthetic reasons. Easy to match coins that are readily available so why not?

    I like the uniform look of your set, but I learned by lesson as a slave to the registry, I bought either ngc or pcgs after that.

    For a full series, I prefer a single grading service (either P or N). I like a uniform look, coins and holders.

    I like uniformity, simply because it's easier to showcase the collection without there being so much "noise" from the differing slabs.

    My 12 piece gold type set coins are all in the PCGS Gold Shield holders with TruViews. It’s mostly common date coins in my set, so waiting for a nice looking coin to come along in that particular holder was easy. Aside from the $3 and type 2 gold dollar, they’re just bullion.

    I wouldn't pay a premium for matching ANACS holder colors in a 2 coin set with one MS-68 and one MS69. But I would pay more for 2 coins in that matched the higher grade (ie both MS69) regardless of color.

    I actually like the color matching idea if the two coins were part of the same set.

    Do whatever makes you happy. It’s your collection and collect however you so desire and it’s not for me to tell you how to collect. But since you did ask I wouldn’t be a slave to a TPG especially a second tier one.

    I like your set and it looks great.
    For me its about the coins. I do like the modern pcgs gold shield holders but I have a range of different slabs.

    For a set like that which is mostly just bullion, the TPG doesn't matter. It's much more economical than using an upper tier service that won't really add any value. And, as you said, it makes him happy... for now.

    Very few of the coins I bought at his age make me happy anymore. I think of most of them as tuition.

    Back in the early 2000s I put together a complete set of Silver Dollar Commemoratives in ANACS small white holders. When it came time to sell, no one cared.

    It is very easy to start wasting money by insisting that all the holders match.

    At his age, and at my age (69), it's about NOTHING but fun. I realize many people are in it for other reasons, investment for example, but @Goob has it right and I hope it stays that way his entire life. I believe it will. He's a VERY smart young man. Learning and collecting whatever suits you at the time is FUN!! I hate if for those who sidestep learning and putting a set together for reasons other than enjoyment. Most of us change our main area of interest through the years as our knowledge and interest grows. So what? It doesn't change the enjoyment I experienced with my last interest.

    Sure, I would like my coins all in one holder, preferably pre prong PCGS holders, but the coin only really matters to me. I like that people have the discipline to wait for the right coin in their preferred holder (if it even exists for some series).

    The uniformity does look nice (and I achieve that with my Ancients, since they’re all NGC). But for my wider (World & US) collection, I’d drive myself crazy and/or broke if I tried to have them all in the same type of holder.

    My collection is presently all PCGS or NGC, with plenty of both, though I’ve had a single ANACS in the mix once or twice. Theoretically I’d also be open to CACG or ICG or an old Hallmark holder if the right one came along, but don’t own any.

    In short, I’ve learned to not mind a variety of services and holder types. Particularly since even within the same service, the types change over time.

    Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

    Proper presentation brings enjoyment.

    Presentations on eBay like these catch my eye. I think that all of these have a “matching” premium except one. (Not mine)
