I want to buy this and dip this so bad...

So the question is, do I buy it, do a quick dip, and put it in my album? Here's the thing. I'm not a fan of the toning. If I buy it (not mine yet), I would plan on breaking it out to put in an album anyway. I am a teeny bit concerned that there might be a reason why the coin would not straight-grade after a quick dip and proper neutralization. But I wouldn't plan on getting it regraded in the future. I just prefer whenever I plan on reselling it that there isn't something obvious I should have thought ahead of time where others would question the coin's surfaces. I've had pretty decent results with the little bit of dipping I've done.

Coin is in an AU55 holder.

I’m absolutely no expert on this, but here are my thoughts:

    1. While most “knowledgeable” collectors hate dipped coins (not me), recognize that regarding dipping, even CAC stickers coins that have apparently been gently dipped. I have many of those in my collection, and EVERY ONE of them has a CAC sticker! While I don’t believe CAC stickers world coins, my point with CAC is just talking about the concept of dipping. However, those silver coins of mine are Mint State and not AU.
    2. You plan on NOT getting it regraded, so even if it would not straight grade after a quick gentle dip, so what?
    3. I don’t know the value of this coin, but if it’s less than $1,000, then so what if in the future it doesn’t straight grade?
    4. Recognize a gentle dip may not give it the “eye appeal” you’re hoping for!
    5. Bottom line - If owning this coin and by giving it a quick gentle dip, if that coin with its new “eye appeal” then gives YOU pleasure, then do it!

I agree that generally I wouldn't want to dip an AU coin (or normally any coins for that matter). I only worry about it "straight-grading" for that future theoretical sale where the coin does not appear obviously messed with nor improperly cleaned. This is a 1902 British Crown (cost for this one is about $500). I would hope a gentle dip would strip that toning right off. Maybe there'd be a hint of some toning left. In previous dipping experiments, my gut tells me that toning is not so embedded and should come off. However, that's why I'm posting this thread here and curious to find out what some others who might be more experienced would say.

I had an experience about 15 years ago:
    bought a 1905 Canadian 25 cent piece for $ 10 in Austria.
It looked good but a bit funny so I included it anyway in a lot of others I bought.
    h
Had it hanging around here "for ever". One day I examined it closely and decided to very carefully "wash" it in a heated pyrex bowle with HW and a drop of soap, just using my fingers.... curiosity, what could I loose? Within seconds all the funny looking dull ugliness went away and a very beautiful nearly perfect sterling silver quarter was in my hands.
well... It graded ICCS MS64. (a rare grade for that coin) Last year I sold it to a Canadian Dealer for 5K who turned around and sold it for 10K within 4 days. we both were very happy campers.
    Dipping- Cleaning??? two different issues!!!
Had i dipped it for 1-2 seconds,,,,, I guess I never know how it would have turned out.
what did I learn????? try HW and soap first... AND, nobody will ever know!
And Yes it is cleaning but not dipping and......it is harmless to try.

and No electronic sniffer will ever detect the brand of soap I used to clean it. :D

Thanks for your experience, YQQ. This PCGS coin looks to be toned and not dirt. I do wonder if MS70 might take off much of that toning. I've seen that happen before.

Due to their low relief, ED VII silver gets pretty rough looking very quickly. Even most AU55’s will tend to look like crap unless the toning gives them cover. I’d encourage you to look for images of other untoned AU’s and see if they give you pause. I’d also encourage you to look at your coin under a loupe before doing anything. All of those little flaws will become far more obvious when dipped.

That said, I might be less hesitant to dip other types of coins. Although I tend to prefer original looking coins, so rarely dip anything.
