    Sorry, it’s a medal, not a coin. But appropriate for the day.

    Medal given by the city of Montevideo to General Zaragoza for his defeat of the French at Puebla on May 5, 1862. Struck in lead.

    There was one example of this medal struck in gold that was to be presented to Zaragoza himself as a war hero, but by the time the medal was ready, Zaragoza had died. He died at the age of only 33 of typhoid fever. The May 5 battle against the French in Puebla gave rise the the Cinco de Mayo "holiday," though it is not a holiday in Mexico.

    The gold medal was presented to Benito Juarez, president of Mexico, on behalf of Zaragoza. It's whereabouts are currently unknown, so all that remain are a few examples struck in lead as here.

    Mexico, Eight Escudos 1862, Durango Mint, Hand on Book style
    Gold, 37 mm, 26.95 gm

    Spanish Eight Escudo coins were called "Doubloons" and this would be a "Mexican Doubloon".

    The coin has circulated quite a bit from it's wear and scratches.

    It is interesting to speculate where it has been since 1862.
