1835, reverse die break
I'm guessing this one is well known / documented (not my series)

A cud would not show letters underneath it

Not to argue, but I believe a cud can show some design elements underneath

A cud comes from a broken die. I see all the design elements, not some.

A retained cud may show all or portions of the design elements, but does not look like the op's coin. If indeed a cud, it is unfamiliar to me. Hopefully more knowledgeable members can elaborate. I guess if a retained cud while still attached might drop enough to be thinly covered, but again foreign to me. JMO

Yes, this is the known 1835 JR-2 "MERIC" cud. One of the rarer ones.
See this thread by @Bikergeek for an illustrated list of the known cuds:

It’s a legit cud. Not my series, but Bust Dime fans are probably familiar with it.

Interesting. I stand corrected. I just don't recall ever seeing that much detail.

It is a legitimate cud die break.
That part of the die did not break completely away.
But it has a very significant field displacement in elevation.

Thanks everyone! Especially enjoyed the Bikergeek link provided by yosclimber. It appears this one is somewhere in between the two stages shown by @Southcounty
