This one at least is vibrant and prooflike gem toners are hard to find. Still it is another incredible result.
Certainly doesn't appear to be a 68+ candidate.
Bet the consignor elated. He may be shopping for a new car at this minute.
He’s probably dancing all the way to the bank. Winning bidder is not the ‘winner’, IMHO. I will never understand the ridiculous premium for gold stickers. The color is nothing special, either. Fatties often toned up in this manner. He better invest in a good shovel, if you know what I mean. He’s gonna need it….

A Fatty with a gold sticker and looks to be potentially incredible rainbow. All the bells and whistles there. Heritage images are not so good, in fact, they don't capture the essence of their offerings at all in the majority of offerings. So either this is a stunning coin worthy of final cost, or it is auction exuberance. But I can't tell by that image and would reserve judgement only after seeing in hand.............

Is fatty toning blah, desirable or just nothing special?
It’s not spectacular, but I think it’s desirable and attractive.
I like the old ANACS toning, as well.
Neither are worth a ridiculous premium.

It can be any of those, as even in the same type of holder, different coins can tone differently, depending upon their environment.

My assumption would be that something in the NGC holder caused the toning. If the slab was airtight that would exclude environmental factors. Older green label PCI IIRC were noted for toning, but it was peripheral.
To my knowledge, the slabs aren’t air tight. And even if they were, effects from the holder materials and/or label can be and are often different for different coins.

I’m not knowledgeable on Morgan varieties…….just trying to figure out why this coin went for $11,000+. Could this be a reverse of 1878? Other than that I don’t see a reason for such a high premium, even with a gold CAC.

Crazy money for common coins!
No, it's a reverse of 79 with the angled tail feather. There was someone whose name escapes me who used to collect the reverse of 78 variety. it was referred to as his coin.
Buy what makes you happy... However, I would expect some change on this one. I believe the 1879-s rev of 78 was already identified by both NGC and PCGS at the time this one was submitted. If it was a 78 rev, I suspect it would have brought more... as in substantially more.
