For the past few years I have been heavily researching the intersection of AI and numismatics as part of my AI coin sorting project.

Folks over at the Newman Numismatic Portal saw the research I was publishing and invited me to give a presentation at this year's NNP symposium at the Central States Numismatic Society Convention happening this weekend.

I did a ton of research and found a lot of interesting history of PCGS' early contributions to AI grading in the 1990s. But even more interesting is the work that PCGS and others are doing today that I uncovered. There is A LOT of movement happening in AI & coins that a lot of people aren't aware of, but more importantly I feel there hasn't been enough discussion on how AI will destroy trust within our hobby. I want to help fix this by shhoting giant flare signal for everyone to be aware and prepare.

The presentation is today will go from 1:30pm - 2:30pm CT. For folks you aren't at the show you can join in via the zoom link! It will be recorded and I'll update this thread once it's available.

If folks have a question you'd like me to answer here, let me know!

I'll have to listen to the talk, but my first reaction is that I can see no evidence to suggest that AI is destroying the hobby so count me as skeptical.

My thesis on how AI is destroying the hobby is twofold:

The coin industry has effectively given Chinese AI coin apps control of the first time experience of most new collectors. The monetization strategy of these apps is about squeezing as much money out of users as possible with little care about the long term damage to trust.

The rise of AI capabilities and agents is flooding the Internet with misinformation about coins. It's going to create fundamental doubts about the accurate provinance of coins. Biggest of all is going to be the increase in advanced counterfeit techniques.

I do cover some bright spots of AI usage, but I advocate for a cross industry consortium to implement some proposals to stay ahead of these dangers.
