Does this Morgan Dollar looked CLEANED to you?

CoinHoarderCoinHoarder Posts: 2,688 ✭✭✭✭✭

I usually don't buy cleaned coins. But I didn't mind the look of this one. So, I bought it.

I suspect the cleaning may be under the chin, down to the date. But, just a guess.

Could you please examine these pictures and see if you can tell where, or how, this coin was cleaned?

Just curious. Appreciate any input on this!

Yes... looks cleaned with a pretty decent scratch on Ms. Liberty's face... 1879-S (Rev of '78) isn't all that tough of a variety, I'd wait... unless it's some rare VAM that I'm unaware of.

That area under Liberty’s chin really jumps out as a cleaned spot.

It's looks cleaned but not harshly cleaned. Just under market acceptable,

    For $67.50 you did fine.
I do wonder what motivates submitters of coins like this.

Actually I disagree. For someone that actually carried silver dollars in their jean pockets, this is how many of them looked. They were not "cleaned" in the sense of someone intentionally doing so. They were "cleaned" by the fabric of the denim pockets.
Absolutely a real pocket carried and commerce used dollar....totally original in my eye.

That cleaning is obvious. If you think otherwise, you shouldn't be buying raw coins.

The brighter areas on the obverse and reverse are a sure fire sign of cleaning.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Yes. It says so on the label.

The area around TED on reverse is glaring.

    Many happy BST transactions

Definite cleaned…..especially stands out on the brighter areas.

Most likely dipped some or applied dip by q tip here and there.

Perhaps a problem coin dealer could tell you what it’s worth.

Reminds me of one a guy in coin club picked up around melt in 2x2 from dealer junk box. Price it at BV plus 10 pct? Maybe cleaned to deflect major marks in other areas. Coin Doc?

I would not fool with that junk. Got nice CACG MS 69 1oz ASE for $89 recently.

I agree it doesn't look terribly cleaned although there are some brighter areas. Absent in person viewing, need to look at some off axis photos and see what that reveals.
