PCGS Washington Quarter/CAC Reconsideration Sub

Matt04Matt04 Posts: 418 ✭✭✭

So...
Out of curiosity I just sent out 8 total pieces from my collection to PCGS under the reconsideration sub.

The following I believe will get a + designation.
The 16-D Buff I suspect was net graded down due to rim hits, too much to keep it from going to 65? I think that's what the graders thought, although this did sticker & its got amazing color and original skin.

1964-P MS67 CAC Quarter. Very nice original surfaces and very unique color, I believe this has a + grade potential.

1944-S in 67 CAC. I submitted this one to get stickered, it has incredible luster, color and surfaces.

Overall, I believe these 3 will upgrade to a + and the remaining I will see what happens to.

Updates to follow in the near future.

Silver Washington quarters in PCGS MS68 is a big ask.

It's difficult to get upgrades on coins that already have a "+" grade. And as others noted, getting a WQ in 68 is a significant achievement. You'd have a better chance (but still very small) of a 68 on a Regrade or raw crackout, IMO.

Personally, I might have sent the 67 CACs in with a couple of low-end 67s. That would give you the best shot of getting plus grade upgrades on those. Either way, I'm looking forward to you sharing the results.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

The WQs already graded MS67+ will have a tough hill to climb to get an upgrade as you are asking PCGS to bump them to MS68. I haven't seen any of the coins in-hand, but just letting you know.

I completely agree with you. I submitted these knowing full well they probably will not upgrade at all, but we’ll see.

That was my thinking too, although you never really know. Hopefully I catch the graders on a good day, maybe one where they just won the lottery. ;)

On a serious note, I think the best contenders out of the group are the 41-S, the 41-D with the splendid reverse, and the 49. I also think the vividly toned pieces will definitely have a better chance.

(The black on wash face is toning)

I know it’s a bit of a gamble at this point, but if any of the non-plus coins upgrade, that alone should cover the grading fees, and while I was at it, I sent these others from my collection in to see if they'd would upgrade.

Both coins with the closeup images are terrific, but that 1941-S is really outstanding. Good luck!

One thing I wanted to point out is that, although I do not think the 64-D will upgrade, it does have the rainbow toning working in its favor. I am not sure whether it is because the dates from the 1960s are especially difficult to find in high grades, or because there were so many quality control issues from the mint like hits etc, but it seems they can be a bit more forgiving with hits on higher-grade coins from that period.

    PCGS MS68 Example:

Yes they both have insane toning, but they also have quite a lot of hits. The first example does not have a sticker which makes sense due to that particular reason, unsure of the second one.

At this level, an in hand review is required to provide any meaningful commentary.

Your coins are attractive… good luck with resubmission

    Update:
Scheduled for grading. Not sure what the turnarounds looking like currently, I know in the fall it was 4-5 weeks.
All certs currently offline as per usual.
