1920 Lincoln toner - Market acceptable?

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,357 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don't submit toners very often so this is out of my realm. But I recently bought this neon toner because I loved it's color! Will PCGS grade a Lincoln this color? I don't mind keeping it in a 2 x 2 by any means. Thoughts?

I would lean towards QC but have seen some borderline examples straight grade so one never knows for certain.

If I needed a nice 1920 Lincoln I would pass on this one due to the fingerprints. Doesn’t matter to me how it grades.

TPG grade is irrelevant in this case, it will sell for a premium because of that color. That's my definition of market acceptable.

Ms 70 or blue ribbon.... color does not appear natural.
The 20's have not really toned this color blue/purple.

Agree this is likely from the application of MS70. That said the TPG's are very forgiving of AT these days and I suspect it has at least a 50/50 chance at a straight grade if there is any luster. I would pass on this coin due to the color and the fingerprints personally.

I agree with this and would not buy it as a problem free coin. With that said, I have seen a good number with a similar look that were straight graded. If you have room in an economy submission and are curious, toss it in.

I had a coin that I thought was borderline MA (rainbow toned 1943 cent). The first time it came back as MS details QC and straight graded as MS66 on a second attempt and quickly flipped it.

The left half of the obverse has original red under the tone. I figured MS70 at some point myself. It has good luster so I figured I'd ask for other opinions. Thanks Guys. It looks awesome in my raw album!

I kinda like it; I have a similar toned 72DDO. NGC liked it, but CAC did not. I wanted to try to cross it to our hosts, but I was informed that it would likely not as they frown on the purplelish toning. IDK, I still may try someday.

The image suggests MS 70 was more than likely used at some point. I would rather see in hand before deciding album or airtite for long term storage.

@Manorcourtman, I have an easy solution for you in the future, so you don’t have to deal with this question again. For those common date Lincolns, purchase ones like this. May pay a little more, but worth it in the end. IMO.

You say they were straight graded. So does the MS70 take some time before turning the coin purple? If so maybe it straight graded before the turning.
edit: other words it was dipped in MS70 then quickly sent in for grading then it turned in the case later.

@Coinscratch In my [limited] experience with MS70, the blue and purple toning is immediate.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

I had not noticed the two brow lines on Lincoln's forehead before (OP).

Okay thanks. I've used it on Kennedys primarily but never on copper.

    @coinbuf that is a lovely coin B)

The 34d is VERY different than the 20. The 20 The toning is sitting on the coin and you can tell because the fingerprints break up the tone.
The 20 toning looks removable and hence why I said it was not original.
NGC is very very relaxed on tye ms70 appearance. PCGS used to be stricter.

Not a common tone color for early 20's Lincolns.
