Added a new photo of just how reflective the fields on this coin are. This coin is so bright!
Very nice! I have wanted one of those but the auctions tend to go higher than my budget allows. Perhaps one day!
Congrats!
A dream coin.
Congratulations!

Way to go. Very beautiful for an MS63. Thanks for sharing.
That is really cool.
Definitely looks very nice for a 63. Congrats on the coin. Such a cool piece of history.
Your coin is nicer than your photo skills! LOL.
Perhaps the halo should e above Liberty’s head instead of on her face? Just kidding.
Great type coin and good to see it in the original PCGS label.
Very special coin. I suggest you read the book "Ship of Gold" if you have not already. It is the prefect item to complement your treasure.

Thank you for the suggestion, I just bought the book. I am looking forward to reading it when I get it in the mail.
Super neat! Which dealer has that Humbert $50 though

And for anyone else who happens to read this thread, if you are a numismatist/ history buff or have any interest in treasure hunting this book is a must read! It begins by narrating what happened to the ship and everyone on board. Heartbreaking story and if you happen to own anything SS Central America the story will enhance your ownership…
I wasn’t there, but I believe that it belongs to Russell Augustin, and AUCM.com.

Wonderful purchase. The coin has a great history and its nice that it is in the original slab. Was wondering did you get the book the holds the slab inside?

I had the same question come up at the show. The book did not come with the coin on this one.
Yes it is Russell Augustin!
It is obviously very cool because of what it is...but @PeakRarities probably wouldn't be that excited to have that specific example in his case.

I would agree! I was curious since it's the lowest graded K-2 which is super neat, I wasn't aware Russell had it

Despite it being the lowest grade it was still wicked expensive. It was so cool to be able to hold it in my hand at the show.

I talked with Russell when he first bought it. He mentioned that there are so many more steps to make a lettered edge octagon coin than a reeded edge coin, hence the substantially higher price point.
@cccoins , I did not realize they had lettered edges. I held it but did not see the lettering. Probably because the holder obstructed the edge.
In 1857?
Somebody had to say it!
Did you get the original box and cert ? Number on cert matches number on slab. I would want that also.
Unfortunately it did not come with the coin.
Cool! Awesome that you have one to @Clackamas1 !
Would you mind sharing a photo on this thread?
Wow that is a stunner ! Looked up the cert and it is MS66+. That is very rare!
Definitely a grail coin. I have one of the bullion coins minted from the recovered hoard. I even have the book & case...somewehre...
I would like to see that too! If you don’t mind, can you post a picture?

You’re gonna make me dig up the box from my back yard, aren’t you? In the meantime, here’s one on eBay

Has there been any discussion on the low grade of that octagon?
By my math, it was only like 6 years after mintage (1851-1857) that it went down?
Someone's pocket piece??
I don’t think the octagon was a shipwreck coin. It did not have the SSC pedigree. Like to think of it as a pocket price of a prospect who struck it rich.
Not the greatest shots, but I stumbled across them in Lightroom when I was looking for something else.
"Fun" fact, they minted the bullion coins over the period of however long the SS Central America was traveling on the same days, which is why mine says "minted September 7, 2001." You can see the date (not well in this photo) engraved over the eagle's head on the reverse. The coins minted on 9/11 fetch a premium.
