I talked with Russell when he first bought it. He mentioned that there are so many more steps to make a lettered edge octagon coin than a reeded edge coin, hence the substantially higher price point.

@cccoins , I did not realize they had lettered edges. I held it but did not see the lettering. Probably because the holder obstructed the edge.

By my math, it was only like 6 years after mintage (1851-1857) that it went down?

I don’t think the octagon was a shipwreck coin. It did not have the SSC pedigree. Like to think of it as a pocket price of a prospect who struck it rich.

Not the greatest shots, but I stumbled across them in Lightroom when I was looking for something else.

"Fun" fact, they minted the bullion coins over the period of however long the SS Central America was traveling on the same days, which is why mine says "minted September 7, 2001." You can see the date (not well in this photo) engraved over the eagle's head on the reverse. The coins minted on 9/11 fetch a premium.
